is there much difference between the 2 all bar 200cc e.g more power, better reliability, fuel economy, one takes to a turbo better than the other?

what drr said
somewhere along the line toyota start EFIing the 5L
i think it was about 2000 when they did, and dont bother with the turbo ones

EDIT: 5L and 3L blocks are exactly the same, toyota only stroked/bored the 3L to make it bigger

jap motors up here in townsville l asked same questions

yes same motor mounts
as drr said don't get the 5le

theres not much difference in motors besides one that l was told u can't interchange the injector pumps even tho there both mechanical

one thing l will point out off topic tho sorry for the hijack mate

l ordered a 3L starter motor 2 weeks ago there are 2 different connections on them mine that was stuffed was a threaded flat piece of copper with a circle connector that screwed to this. then the new one was a male blade connector in a plastic housing for a connector

with this motor are u getting a from brisbane motor importer or engine importers were they come as a bare long motor or complete?
2.8 motors have a bad history for droppin l think it's no3 big end bearing this is mainly caused by bad service history l'm babying mine till l get the 5l motor with denco turbo kit

other thing with starter motors there are 2 different ones for hilux 10 and 11 tooth starter motors

sorry again for the hijack mate hope this helps

I was researching th 5l engine to replace the 2lT I had. If the engine is from the same vehicle it will mate to your box. The truck engine version is a little different. Depandant upon the original vehicle the engine mounts may need changing. I eventually opted for a 1kz-te.

For the extra dosh, the 1kz-te motor is worth the go! but is much more indepth, as its got an ecu and wires going everywhere. Mates car had to get an import half cut and use the electronic dash cluster and looms.
Also the 1kz-te spools up pretty quickly and go damn good!
They are also turbo'd out of the box, so do the math, the price for a turbo 5L compared to a 1kz-te, pretty much the same.
Also the block on 5L's have thinner walls due to it being a 3L block just bored out. So therefore are more prone to overheating, adding a turbo then onto the motor will increase the chances even more.

to fit the 1kz-te you have to move engine mounts and cant use your original box .and the excelerator is fly by wire on the 1kz-te its a big job,i have a 1kz-te with all wiring and dash cluster out of a 2004 sr5 in the corner of the shed but my auto elec talked me out of putting in my 84 runner

Yeah, have to move engine mounts, make up new pipes for turbo to air box, a/c lines, etc.
Also it uses the surf gearbox and therefore has a chain transfer
