I did an oil change on my 1hz before going away last week and shortly after the oil change I developed a ticking sound. It only appears after driving for around 3-5 minutes and stays once warm, only comes around at 2000rpm and goes away after it drops below and it makes no difference weather it is under load or not. I always use mobil delvac mx oil and its been an extremely quiet engine the whole time I have owned it. The only thing different is I used a ryco oil filter this time, i usually use the terrain tamer type. Is this a common thing? Ive checked the oil for any metallic colours and it is fine so im left clueless with this one.

Jabber gone. Now have 98 nissan terrano and a 94 4.2ldiesel rv troopy on 33s slowly getting the fancy bits. How the hell do I change my user name?

I have the same thing with mine, but mine is about 2100rpm. doesn't matter what oil i use or filter. Some say to do the shims in the tappets.

After you've frigged around with adjusting the tappet clearances the tap will most likely still be there. Virtually every 1HZ i've ever come across has the tappitytappity noise. As long as it doesn't turn into something like the sound of a set of dwarves forging excalibur inside your crankcase it'll go forever like that

The 1hz's make a ticking noise Toyota attributes to crankshaft flex. Fairly common, and it may just be coincidence you noticed it after an oil change.
The 1hz is an overhead cam with buckets and shims. I doubt that's a problem. I've seen a few high mileage 1hz's that have never had the clearances done and are still running smooth.
One example is a 1hz-b out of a coaster bus. 730,000 on it when it was removed. Still smooth all the way to redline and making good power. Lots of highway miles and high revs are good for it. It puts to shame just about every other 1hz i've seen.
