Can I give you some advice on GE finance. DONT. Its very tempting, and can seem very convenient, but unless your VERY regimented in paying it off, you can get into a whole heap of trouble.
I got into debt to them for a considerable sum, through getting this and that interest free, and was just not paying anything off apart from the interest, and that was a struggle.
If you dont pay it off completely before the due date, they backdate the interest to the start of the contract, and the interest is about 29%. They have a whole heap of tricks up their sleves to rip your money out of you. I could tell you some stories.
If you cant afford to pay for it now, can you really afford to pay for it then, and for ever and ever after?
I am now spending 5 years paying off my GE and another credit card debt via a bank loan, that automatically comes out of my pay.
Sorry to put the mocka on you, but its just not worth it. Companies like that using tactics like that should be outlawed by the government.
And yes, its easy for me to preach. I now earn a very reasonable wage, but not so long ago, I was raising a family on around 40k a year, and things were tough. Its a very easy trap to fall into, and I fell into it bigtime.

Stay AWAY FROM GE!!!!

Pay it on time - They'll get you
Pay it of late - They'll get you
Pay it of early - They'll get you

I got a loan years ago from GE, Paid it of about 3 years early. Had to pay the full term's intrest and fee's + early exit fee's (about $2000 IIRC) + Admin Fee's + Some other crap. Cost me about $5000-$6000 to pay it out early.

Most of the above fee's apply across all loans BUT GE charges 10x the about of other's!

Early exit fees -
ComBank - $175
Westpac - $250
ANZ - $200

Save up, sell some unwanted/unneed stuff, If your set on getting get a personal Loan from a good bank BUT Don't go to GE or a imilar Financee Company

In all honesty, my CC is maxed out every month...I also make the full payment each month, but hang onto the dollars while the credit is interest free...

I've usually pay my credit card fee within the first 3 months...and then theres the 'kettle' points

But still...

Just gotta be smart with these things and learn how the game works, and then play it smart...

We dont do GE , as far as i am aware finance companies will not get involved with suspension sales as we have pursued it, we opted for our own laybay system that is interest free, only downfall is the timeframe is not as long as getting a loan.

Would never use for a loan but I have used GE for over 15 years now & never had an issue. I do admit I only use it for interest free terms on purchases. Pretty much every purchase inside the house over $1,000 has been on the GE card. Don't see the issue as long as you make the payments within the period.
The simple fact is don't buy on impulse, look waht you want to buy, calculate whether you can make the payments over a 24mth period, if you can't .......... don't do it. Pretty simple really

I've just used an ordinary bank cc with superior. It's a good way to spend alot of money though. :( Interest rates are generally a bit better with bank issued cc's too.

I have a ge mastercard too. But only use it for interest free deals at harvey norman and the likes. If you wait for the big interest free periods like 36 months+ it's great for getting new electronics and furnature. I bought a big plasma on 48months interest free. Still paying it off at the minimum which is something like 25 bucks a month. only additional cost is a 3 dollar fee per month when there is an outstanding balance.

Brooksy is spot on.

I've bought a heap of gear on the GE card I have and have had no dramas .
Something most places neglect to tell you about the interest free deals is the monthly account fees, you can pay off the borrowed amount but if you don't pay the account fees they can and will sting you interest on these.

yeah we got a ge card when we got something interest free. and if you paid back what they wanted you to pay back every month you would never pay it off in the interest free period. even when we had the balance down to a few hundred owing the minium repayment kept getting less and less so that if you did just pay that amount you wouldnt pay it off. personally i would touch a ge or any other card again. you have to be really disaplined and know exactly how much you have to pay to pay it off in the interest free period.

you cant simply pay the min amount.

We got the ge card then got the laptop, paid it off, got a dslr, paid it off, now the plasma, paying it off. Only one purchase at a time, dont impulse like Brooksy said. Simply pay off monthly amount that will have you pay it out on time. And we had our limit reduced, cause the limit they gave us was double what we wanted/needed.

I will give you an example of how GE rips you off. This happened to me personally.

My minimum monthly payment was around $120 a month. I had set up an automatic direct debit to my GE account, crediting $100 every fortnight. So thats roughly $200 a month (every 4 weeks) well in excess of the minimum monthly payment, you would think.

Yet a couple of months in a row, I was hit with late payment fees. It took a huge amount of time and phone calls to find out the reason why.

The period between your statement date, and the due date, is roughly 3 weeks. If the minimum monthly amount is not paid in that 3 week period, then GE considers the minimum monthly amount not paid, and charges you $30 for the pleasure. Of course, as the dates progressed, eventually, one of my fortnightly payments fell outside the 3 week period, so even though I was paying nearly double the minimum monthly payment, on these occasions, GE considered that I had not paid the minimum monthly payment.

It took threats of legal action, and extensive phone calls to GE to get those fees refunded.

I'll tell you where your ONLY problem was ........... DIRECT DEBIT !!!
Control your own money, where & when it leaves your bank. The only time in the 25yrs I have been using a bank or any money facility is when direct debit has been used. It makes no difference which bank or lending facility you use you are guarranteed to here someone from every facility complain or have had an issue where they have farked up when using direct debit. Automated facilities always have a glitch sometime.
Like I said earlier, I have never had 1 single issue with GE as I have ALWAYS paid within the interest free period & I have utilised GE well in excess of $50,000 in that time. But on the other side of the coin it doesn't surprise me that some people have had issues, reasons for those issues ....... well I obviously couldn't know.

I use GE interest free for some purchases, and have for years. I've never had any trouble and never paid any interest at all. I did get hit with a late fee once, I complained (I can't remember the reason now) and they reversed it for me.

I think they make a lot o dough off people who don't manage the repayments well but for us it's been a good way to buy at least some stuff. Mainly stuff where we couldn't find it cheaper without the interest-free anyway.

Having said that we are pretty good with our debt and keep our credit cards in credit, etc.

X Boggetty...

Our whole house nearly has been slowly decked out using GE Interest Free from Hardley Normal or Domayne. A good thing in Penrith (not many of them) is the two are side by side, and they first up say they can't change prices when you buy interest free, you have to pay retail. But when you start mentioning the other shops prices they still start fighting each other...

Anyways yeah, play smart and interest free works well. If making the payments might be a struggle, don't make the purchase.

Personally not a fan of GE just because of their ruthless attitude but I have used them and probably will in future. Like mentioned you have to be smart and really have to be able to afford it. I get paid monthly which makes payments a breeze and it doesn't hurt that I earn decent coin too. I would never reccomend it to someone struggling to make ends meet though, I think a bank loan would be alot wiser.

I have been stuffed around somewhat by GE before though. I moved house and updated all my details but letters were not being sent to my new address. This I didn't think was a problem because I was under the impression I'd paid my debt off in full. But alas, a day or two after making the last payment I was slapped with a $20 account keeping fee unbeknownst to me as I never recieved the letters. Next time I went to make a GE purchase I discovered I'd been black listed and owed about $50 by then after the interest and overdue fee etc. I promptly paid this and was able to use my GE card the very next day. Other than I've had no dramas and I've always paid mine off early and never been slapped with an early exit fee.

Oh and I did notice though often the minimum monthly repayment amount is often less than what is required to pay it off in the interest free period so that is a trap for young players.

Hi guys, this is Skye, from GE Money. OK, so obviously I work for GE Money, so maybe I’m biased, but I do have a couple of tips with regards to Interest Free….
• If you are interested In using interest free to get your suspension Mulcahy, I’d suggest looking on our website – we list all the retailers you can use your card at.
• When you’re at the store you can ask about the promotions they have running at the moment. There are two main types of interest free : firstly “installment interest free” – with this plan you'll be asked to make a minimum monthly payment each month. It is correct that in some cases the minimum payment does not pay off the full balance by expiry - in this case I’d suggest dividing the purchase amount by the length of the plan to ensure you have it paid off in the interest free period. The second kind is “Buy now pay later” which means we ask for no payment until the expiry of the promotion. With this type of plan you could take the same approach and make monthly payments, or you could pay the full balance prior to the expiry date to avoid any interest charges.
• With our interest free it's correct there is a monthly account keeping fee of $3.95 (for the Buy Now Pay Later plan this will accumulate each month and be added to the balance you need to pay out at the end)
• Anytime you want to make a final payment it’s best to call our centre and request a payout figure.
• The best way to avoid paying interest is to set up a direct debit with us, so we can ensure that all payments are made on time and the debt is cleared by the end of the interest free period. Just as a side note, we also only calculate interest after the expiry date and only on any remaining unpaid balances - ie we don't back-date it.

I hope you enjoy our interest free promotions - over 80 per cent of GE Money’s customer actually never pay a cent of interest because they pay off their deal within the set period. A further 70 per cent of customers then go on to purchase another interest free product!

It does sound like some of you have had specific issues with other things eg BundyRumandCoke– direct debit and some of you have mentioned late fees . If anyone wants some help with any issue you’ve had in particular, please let me know – I’d be happy to help. skye@ge.com

GE Finance's ears must've been ringing. Or they have some kind of alarm that goes off when too many people mention GE on the internet :)

This was always my understanding. I keep hearing the "backdating" thing but it wouldn't, imho, stand a chance legally, so I have never believed it. And I've never seen a real case of it, just hearsay.

One thing people always say is, but its interest free so why not?

The reason why not it because the retailer is paying the fees upfront to the lender on your behalf. so you spend $1000 and hardly normal pays say $80 to ge to lend you the money.

If you walk in with cash you will almost always get a significantly better deal.

try asking next time whats your best price? ok can i use ge, most will say no ge will be at the rrp, or a lesser discount.

nothing in life is free.

Having said that it can be used well.

but yeah i have been hurt by their fees, in fact they still owe me $230 which i over paid to them by mistake and they wont give back!!!

Give her a go, and see whether her word is any good. I would be interested in any results you get. I dont have to worry anymore. My GE card was cut into a thousand pieces, and the account will never be reactivated.

Oh, and SKYEGE, Hekta asks a pertenant question a few posts back. How did you become aware of this thread? You have a total of 2 posts in this forum. The first, the day you joined on the 21st, and your last response. You were obviously not a previous member here, unless under a different name, so this thread had to pop up on GEs radar somehow. Your obviously watching this thread now, but Im sure I am not the only one curious about this. Is it just another case of big brother watching us?

Hi BundyAndCoke, we are trying to build up our social media capability so we are out in forums and in the wider web looking at discussions about our products and service, so hopefully in future your interaction with us can be wherever or however you want it to be. Examples like what’s been discussed here help us understand how and where we can improve our response and service you better in future. Skye
