hi guys this has probably been covered many time but i cant find the answers im looking for
a mate of mine has a 98 model hilux surf v6 petrol the problem hes having is every time he wheels it it busts cvs even when not under extreme load it has a 2-2.5 inch lift a 2 inch body lift and 33's rear air locker but no front
what could be causing them to break so quickly they get replaced with brand new ones each time and dont last more than a trip or 2 if hes lucky

Re: hilux surf cvs
Too much lift in the front creating a steep CV angle
or/and
cheap CV's .... try a pair of (good condition) 2nd hand genuine ones.
Front auto locker will help, as you won't need momentum to drive stuff reducing the free spinning under power followed by a sudden stop when it touches down.
Of course actually being able to drive (pick the right line for your rig) helps a lot ....

Re: hilux surf cvs
Look up RCV Performance in the US...they make race spec CV's that will suit the front IFS of your mates Surf......prepare to pay a pretty penny for them but they have a lifetime warranty so you know they gonna be tuff....
they are currently testing the first set in a Formula TOY that is being kept IFS in the US -
27 spline and to suit the 7.5" front diff......from memory they are around the 1500 mark for a pair!
Inner shafts above (Black) and outer shafts below.
for anyone requiring stronger CV's/shafts for current model hilux's contact Monster Rides as they have developed stronger cv shafts for current model hilux's and will be making them for the older 7.5" IFS hilux's in the future too at some stage.

930 Porche CVs 4340/300m lightened
300m center bar
RCV Toy IFS outer CV - 4340 bell, 300m star, 3/4" balls. The design is the same family and geometry as the RCV Dana 30/44 stuff and the uber-stout Longfields.
The first prototypes will be on the way to us next week and will be abused soon after.

Re: hilux surf cvs
2 things to check:
1. Check his steering stops.
- They get bent/snap clean off and then it the CV goes beyond the safe zone and break really easy.
- I ended up getting some rated bolts and grinding them into a steeping stop that lasts a little longer.
2. Check the droop bumpstop same thing, the rubber bump stop may have broken off or the bracket it bolts to may have bent allowing too much droop thus CV explosion again.
- I use the uptravel round style bump stop, shaved it down to an angle for better shape and a larger contact area to absorb the load so that they last a lot longer.
Best solution to breaking CV's:
SUPRALUX CONVERSION!! I'm still struggling to break cheap chinese CV's now!! woohoo!! V8 + IFS + Heavy right boot = No problems, just big Grin!!!

Re: hilux surf cvs
Supralux conversion.
Same sort of effort/cost as a SAS conversion and goes everywhere the SAS boys in my club go.
Lots cheaper and easier to replace CV's though so i tend to abuse it more than the SAS boys dare
