This was my triton when I bought it from the Marburg Rural Fire Brigade in Queenslands west, for a measily $2500!! its a 94 model and has a genuine 35,000 kms on the clock, when I picked it up. As you can see it still has the unit number on the door and 800 litre water tank on the back with a custom tray which I later swapped for the alloy one.

I drove it around like this for a little while, to bribie island, fraser island, the local tracks and to and from work when I just wanted more......... So I got stuck in....... 33s, 2inch cab and tray lift. wound up the torsion front(dodgy i know) and that was ok for another couple months, but again I wanted more........

Just got back from a night at Bribie Island, had a great time and was really impressed with the triton. Last time I was there, I only had the stock skinnies on and no lift, so I was keen to see how much torque I would loose on the sand, which thankfully, was very little. Havnt got a UHF yet so I am definetly getting one this week!! Also almost finished the fab work on my new bash plate, so will post some pics up when fitted. Got a week long trip to Fraser Island coming up, so I am hoping to have my long range tank fitted by then. I am also thinking about replacing my roof lights with bigger 100w as they are only 55w at the moment. Still have a bit to do, anyway heres a couple pics.......

Fitted my bash plate today, I made it from 7mm alloy sheet that I had bent up at the local engineering shop as the bender that I have access to couldnt handle it and I almost broke it....I still cant decide wether or not I should paint it black, put some holes in it, or leave it as it is? What do you guys think??? I also got stuck in and made my shovel mounts for inside my tray. I probly could have gone out and bought them and save myself the hassle but where is the fun in that? Still heaps to do before Fraser but im chippin away at the list anyway....... tell me what you guys think...

It's looking good!

You might need some holes simply for airflow to the front diff. Late model Pajeros have essentially the same front diff, and they have cooling fins cast into the housing. My NJ doesn't have the fins, but the front bash plate has slots to let some air through. Don't know about painting it - black, it would probably disappear quite nicely, but once it starts to get some stone chips etc it probably will look worse.

I'm sure you'll have fun on Fraser.

Bash plate looks killer mate. Is 7mm a bit overkill or is that wat they're normally made out of? I was gonna use steel plate for mine and was thinkin of using something around 3mm, not sure wat thicknesses it comes in. I guess steel would be stronger then alloy tho so should be ok.

I pinched my shovel holders off me bro (bought them and never got round to putting them on) and only cost him a few bucks each. They look pretty much the same as urs I rekon. There's not much to them.

Not much happenin with my Triton at the moment, hopefully the banging sound is the transfer case chain slipping as I'm picking up a second hand case next pay and gonna chuck that in. New chain was around $700 genuine. Went to Repco, a kit was about $600, which DOESN'T include the chain, apparently that HAS to be bought genuine....so yeah rung around the wrecking yards in Adelaide and found a second hand case for $350!! Lets hope it's in good condition lol.

to be honest, I thought that 7mm was a little thick, but alloy is so soft that I didnt wanna hit the first rock and it bend on me.lol, its pretty light and I think that I will end up drilling some holes in it for cooling. and probly just leave it and not paint it I reckon.The original bash plate that was on there was that badly bent up that It was actually squashed around the front diff ha ha, so that was why I went so thick with this one

good luck with the transfer case. Its always a gamble getting anything from the wreckers, most offer some sort of warranty so that should be a little comfort i guess

I think my sub tank might be next..... not sure yet....getting rid of the 'fire engine yellow' is playing on my mind but lol

Got a few little things done, thought id update my thread. Installed my new Uniden UHF, GME 6db aerial, new 100 watt spotts on the roof, I bought cheap ones cause I love the bush at night and I know im gonna rip at least 1 off on a branch, so they will be easy to keep relacing, and also made a new wiring harness for them with a bigger relay, much brighter than the others. finished with my bash plate, got it powder coated and drilled some air holes in it. I think it looks much better and blends in a little better. Wouldnt mind seeing some more older tritons on here so post some pics and give us a look..........

Hey guys, just got back from my annual trip to Fraser Island and had an awesome time even if the weather was a little off. Once again the Triton was faultless the whole trip with no issues all week. I really think that these things are a little underestimated at times for this type of 4 wheeling, especially with a bit of lift and bigger rubber. The V6 really loves the sand even with a load on, Im really happy with how far its come. The only real drama I had was my own fault. When we were leaving Inskip point I stopped at rainbow to refuel and air up and in my hurry to get home I had forgotten to unlock my hubs and continued on my 200km drive home unawares. I realised my mistake when I got home and saw oil everywhere under my ute that had come from the tranfer case. On the 3 hour trip home the oil had gotten that hot it thinned out and leaked past the front seal going to the front tailshaft. My question is have I done some damage here or will I be able to get away with just replacing the front seal and hopefully thats it?? Any help would be great. Any way heres a couple pics of my triton loving the sand

I don't think the leak had anything to do with the front hubs being locked, and it may not be a dud seal. Pajeros have a habit of leaking through the front yoke; this could be your problem too. The cut the splines inside the yoke requires a through-hole, which is blocked with a welch plug. These welch plugs can leak.

I've had a problem twice. First time, I removed the yoke, cleaned it and sealed it with epoxy. A few years later, it started leaking again - on a trip to the Victorian High Country. So I bought a replacement from a wrecker.

I'm not sure what to try next time.

thanks for that mate. What kind of epoxy did you use because you said it lasted a couple years so I might just give that a go first before I try anything else

hey there, nice 4by u have there,i have the same but a dual cab,ive just converted it to a 3.8ltr v6 backed with a 4speed auto, much better than the 2.6 5speed. where there any modifications to fit 33" tyres? i've wound me torsion bars up, trimmed guard with grinder and my 31"tyres just scrape on a full right hand turn.

I think they may even be bigger than 33s, they are 305/75/16s, so I think thats something like 34?? But yeah, I had to take about 2-3 inches of the guard and adjust my steering lock stops out further to stop the tyre rubbing on my idler arms on either side. I must have the worst turning circle going around, but its worth it. Im not sure on rim offset, they are GU patrol rims, but I wouldnt mind getting correct fitting offset rims and maybe some 285/75/15s, just for a little better fitment, because they do hit over large bumps if Im going to fast. I also did a 2 inch cab lift and I had to lift the bullbar up with the cab to give extra clearance up front. Hope this helps you with your tyre choice. post up some pics if you like.

awesome looking triton mate iv just got a 3l v6 one myself ImageImage
first pic is b4 the 31" muddies went on have got extractors and duel batteries also but looking to get 2" sus and 2" body shortly you are right the older tritons are under rated iv had mine going everywhere iv wanted so far with only bending the side steps (hence the lift)
its good to see there are others out there with them will post a thread up when iv got more mods done.

thanks mate, Ive been waiting to see someone else put some pics up of their old triton, it looks good. With the extractors, did you notice an improvement in performance or fuel consumption at all, because ive been wanting to get the whole exhaust done on mine, but dont wanna shell out so much for little gain. and duel batteries, I also have that on my immediate list of things to do. Where is your 2nd battery located? I wanted to keep them both under the bonnet but I dont know if theres enough room.

yeah the batteries fit nice under the bonnet ill take some photos tonight for you.
the extractors make a difference but i want to get 2.5" pipe to the back and a snorkel that should help the fuel economy.
how many k's do you get out of your's?

photos would be awsome! with the 33's im getting 450-500k's out of a tank, without I was getting bout 550, maybe a little more. When I fitted my snorkel I definetly noticed a difference also. thanks mate

thanks for that mate, thats the exact idea i had in my head, but i wasnt 100% sure if i could get them both in there, you just confirmed it for me. And if i only got 350 kays out of my tank id sell my truck for sure!! Here i am complaining about the fuel consumtion ive got! thanks again and look forward to reading your thread.

hey guys, nice utes, im finding it hard to post pics of my ute, is there a special way to do so??? i have winded my torsion bars another inch, so maybe 2-2 n a half inches in total, cut my guard slightly, and now run 33" tyres, hopefully this would help with my fuel consumption issues. Origanally when it was a 4cyl/5speed i was gettin round 500-520km, v6/4speed auto conversion roughly 440-450km now im hoping to see a little more with the taller tyres, i'll keep u guys posted.

to post pics you need to put them on a different site like photobucket.com and then add the img code to ur post on here i should hopfully get mine lifted soon then might consider 33" bighorns :) although i only just got the 31"buckshots on there would be good to see more older tritons done up :D and 400-440k's would be nice iv only just gotten 350k's once :x

thanks heaps for that, heres a couple of pics i took about a month ago, then it had the 31" maxxis bighorns and a slight torsion bar tweak, now its got another bonnet due to bonnet flying up at 100kmh, and bending like a twistie, 4 roof mounted spotlights, 33" bfg all terrains and a little bit more tweaking from torsion bars, i'll update more photos very soon.Image[Image]

nice! I especially like the colour-coded front grill. Im looking forward to seeing your updated pics already. Next for mine is probly fabing some steel side steps, dual batteries, exhaust and extractors. Keep the pics comin fellas, I enjoy seeing these old things get some attention
