anythng can be done at home if you have the skills and tools and knowledge.

Hey mate, i know its the opposite end of the scle, but you could look at some mintrucking forums, they regularly extend chasssis, with detailled descriptions on sectioning the rails, extending, rewelding, fish plating and so on, the principles are the same. Just a thought.
If you have the skills it can be done at home, but it would be recommended it be done professionally and an engineer would have to be talked to as to the approval phase of this modification.
