GQ patrol air box replacement???
GQ patrol air box replacement???
Hey guys
I'm putting a top mount intercooler on my GQ so i have to move the air box from up there. I heard that a GU air box will fit straight in so tried one and my oversize radiator gets in the way and nothing will line up. Has anyone ever come across this before or has anyone ever used something else? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
From memory I used the existing holes from the pre cleaner to bolt the gu unit in. Used a spacer under 1 leg think it was the front 1 (easy to work that out anyhow). the snout of the air box sits approx 20mm from the inner gaurd, I opened up the hole in the inner gaurd as the snout was off centre slightly, then ran the correct size hose fom my snorkle to the outlet on the air box. You can either cut the ring off of the snout on the air box & slip the hose over that or slide a piece of exhaust pipe inside the snout (Get a tight fit as you can) & sika flex around it as I did, works well.

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
I'm building a custom air filter set up and plan on using a Donaldson air box but need to confirm the cfm required for my GQ TD42 NA for now but soon to have a turbo.
Anyone with an answer for me? (don't mean to hijack but seems still related and might help...)
Thx,
Mr. D

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
Donaldson air filter with 3" inlet out should be fine, un less your planning to run more than 20psi boost. 20psi @ 4000rpm requires 454 CFM.

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
I'm getting some plates machined up at the moment for custom aluminum airbox's will flow plenty as i'll be using the panel filters from a diesel v8 landcruiser. Will post more info when I have it.
Anything is possible, it just comes down to time and money.

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
I have just been told that a standard GU air box sucks as much as 20Kw out of a standard TD42 and i am running 25psi boost so might run into trouble. Anyone no of an off the shelf air box that will fit in front left corner of GQ and be good for this much boost?

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
Apparently he changed it to a donaldson air box and filter. Not sure which one
Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
So really it didnt suck 20kw. But really a free'er flowing intake system of a Donaldson air cleaner provided a 20kw gain with no other mods.albosski wrote:Apparently he changed it to a donaldson air box and filter. Not sure which one
Toyota airboxes are pretty good. Have a nice 3" inlet and being creative can have a 3" outlet in the lid. But the best bit the filters cost bugger all and can be had from anywhere.

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
i done away with the main air box and just run the factory gq pre cleaner, they run a heavy duty air filter so its fine to just run the one, just clean it out regulary.
GQ SWB 4.2 BOOSTED AND COOLED
Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
Yer but there expensive for the true heavy duty filter. Toyota filters are less than $20RED SHORTY wrote:i done away with the main air box and just run the factory gq pre cleaner, they run a heavy duty air filter so its fine to just run the one, just clean it out regulary.

Yer but how is it rated for airflow?
I am guessing that since a good turbo for a TD42 is rated at 400hp or there abouts for a 2lt petrol. Then it might be ok. I hate shit I gotta clean. I would much rather have a paper filter and dispose of it when the job is done.
Pretty sure K&N filters have been discussed before. And the concensus was they are to HP as is just removing the filter altogether.

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
Yep. ISUZUROVER did some substantial testing to show it too. There's a whole thread dedicated to it somewhere on here - CBF looking for it though.turps wrote:pigfmr wrote:Pretty sure K&N filters have been discussed before. Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???

Re: GQ patrol air box replacement???
Read this article it was a test done in the US comparing different filters.
it covers both flow rate and cleaning ability.
