75 Series Tranfer Case Oil Contamination

Post by eddy00 »

G'day All,

ive just joined here after talking to a mate so forgive me for jumping right in with probably a pretty dumb question.

i have a HZJ75RP and i have a problem with it burning transfer case oil, not only this but it does build up a fine paste of metal on the sump plug, im guessing that something pretty nasty is going on, one of my mates said thats pretty normal for a 75 and not to worry too much.

i was thinking about having a go at putting some fully synthetic 75w90 oil in it to try to address the burning (smell) of it. but im pretty worried that its something pretty major and that i need to repair it sooner rather than later.
later being better as ill have the tools and parts more available to me.

so what do you guys reckon?

oh it does not leak between the tx and gearbox and does not have the bypass pipe.

thanks in advance

sorry forgot to actually pose a question. :D

has anybody else observed the tx case building up a fine paste of metal, and what am i most probably going to need doing.

and what can i add to the oil to increase its high temp ability, will synthetic help?

i dont belive that the gearbox on the hzj75 has the same issue as the hj75/60series, do. but they might. if not the equliser tube wont really do much. and i dont know much about your transfer. but i know my 75 calls for 90w oil. so i dunno if 75 w90 will be think enough. (unless 75 w90 is the viscosity that 90 becomes when hot)

the metalic sludge that is on the magnetic plug is normal. depending on how long it has been since you have done a oil change will depend on how much is built up. its just from the gears, there will always be some wear with metalic parts. even with oil.

the burning smell i cant help you with. unless its your clutch burning and not the oil. what colour was the oil that came out. and did it have a burnt smell?? oil will have a burnt smell if its been way to hot. but i wouldnt think transfer oil would get nearly hot enough to be burnt. but im no gearbox specialist, what you could do is give a sample of it to some one who tests oil( i know caterpillar do, but i dont know if the do public testings) some hydraulic joints do, but they might not know what to look for with gearbox oil. one of the joints i used to work for did it, but they wouldnt know what the oil should be like i wouldnt think
