Sierra SPARTAN LOCKER in Vitara SUCCESS

Post by christover1 »

SPARTAN LOCKER INTO SIERRA CARRIER
FIRSTLY. I am not a mechanic or a qualified diff fitter.
This is just how I did it. Not necessarily the correct way.
As instructions supplied were not relevant to a 4 pin Sierra carrier.
They were to suit a 2 pin, with open access.
Just another note,
instructions were emphatic on leaving out all the original thrust washers.
Leaving them in could make for wrong clearances maybe??
It may help somebody.

So the pins don't work loose with the 5:12 gears.
At least I hope it works.

:? :? PS
EPIC FAIL :bad-words:
This was to be fitted into a Vitara.

One Vitara drive shaft is fatter than the other, did not allow for that. :?
Got diff and locker all together ...but alas Vit shaft no fit into sierra carrier. :x
Made drive shaft fit with grinder, to test locker, but of course it leaked badly.
Locker not unlocking too well, so must play with clearances.

Choices that I can think of
1. do conversion to fit passenger side bolted type to drivers side.
That would work, but cost factor is high.

2. I really think the Sierra locker will work in the Vitaras 2 pinion carrier, as long as I use Sierra side gears..
cheaper option, but unsure if it will function.

3. Cant think of anything nice :bad-words:

For now, will pull diff out and be 2wd again while thinkings.

Locker fitted perfectly into Vitara carrier.
Was unlocking on floor with lots of effort.
Hopefully driving will unlock it more easily.
Diffs back under car.
Can't test yet, need to fix up a cv boot and stuff,
and fit the drive shaft tomorrow.
Will hate wondering all night if locker will work right this time,
but I done for the day.
knackered and cussing too much, must be time to stop. :bad-words:

YAY TEAM
We are now locked up front.
No issues with using a Sierra auto locker into a Vitara.
As long as You have the 2 pin type, which every one seems to have.
And use Sierra 4 pin type side gears.
2 pin type MAY foul on locker
Same fitting technique, except you start at other end.
It took a while to free up, now it is much smoother.
Not as smooth as my rear Lock Rite, but it should bed in.
Thanks ALL for support, help, parts, and ideas along the way.
