4.2 TURBO EXHAUST OPTIONS
4.2 TURBO EXHAUST OPTIONS
Just wondering what peoples oppinions are of running an exhaust on a turbo vehicle without a muffler.
I am up for a new exhaust on the patrol and it is at the moment a 3" mandrel thru a muffler of some sort and then for some reason after the muffler it is press bent! Not good at all and the whole thing is a mess rusting away and just generally not well done.
I am going to get a bolt together 3" mandrel bent new exhaust but I am unsure wether to put a muffler on it.
Any other tips/tech I should be looking into??
Any info would be appreciated as I am booking it in today hopefully get done in the next couple of weeks.
Cheers
Brian

from what i understand, which isnt much, turbos done require mufflers, if it as an aftermarket turbo, some of the kits come with a mandrel bent section of exhaust, byt normally come with a full system,
now, you can run it without a muffler, but i believe the td42's with turbos will require one to be roadworthy, as they can be quite loud,
i had a n/a td42 with 2.5" system, and straight through muffler, and it gets a little loud between 2000 and 3000rpm, not that im complaingin, i love it.....

I know guys with TD42's turbo'd (factory and aftermarket) and most are running 3" exhaust. As for the ones with out the muffler they dont get to load. Also th GU ute that I have travelled in a couple of times. The noise from the exhaust isnt noticable at hwy speeds anymore then an exhaust with muffler.
I wouldn't worry about it and then if it is to loud for you, it want take much to get a muffler put in.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
Yeah that is what I was thinking of doing. I will get it without a muffler then if it is a problem I will put one in.
The noise wont be a problem in the cab mainly cause you are ahead of the outlet. It will be the poor bastard on the footpath or in the little buzz box next to me at the lights!!!!
I love the sound of a turbo diesel without a muffler
I was more thinking about performance gains/losses etc.
Cheers.

beaudesert exhaust [ 07055412767 ]did a special for me.
it has a 3" outlet on the turbo then runs thru a flexi joint and finishes just behind the cab.
it is very noisy [being so short] but the low down torque has improved heaps which is why i got it done this way.
brian told me if i wanted to improve top end power i should run the exhaust all the way to the rear of the truck.
funny thing is its pretty quiet unless its under load and doesnt drone at all

I have a 3" mandrel bent system ..... its flanged behind the cab
can have either a dump straight there(which it is now)
and i also have a full system sitting in the shed which dumps out the drivers side .... and i only run a straight through resonator on the full bit
qdot don't know the difference ...
its only loud under load .... and waste gate works beautifully with just the
dump pipe *ptsssh!*

I thought sidepipes were illegal? big in the 80s with the HT ute crew
I think in vic you arnt supposed to have them on the passenger side. But think you can have them on the Drivers side, with the exhaust tip pointing down at a 45degree angle.

u can have ur zaust dump out the drivers side behind the cab ... only on utes ... no better peformance ... its just a longer pipe really ... and some thing to make it quiet ... its still straight through ...
more performance from the standard muffler and pipe work all the way to the rear and a zillion bends tho ...
ute now revs to a full 5k ... sounds great too
