hi all,
its me again, ive got something on my mind, and need opion's.
i pulled down my 308 as it has been sitting a while and ive been cutting and grinding around it, i pulled the heads off to make sure no sh*t dropped down, and glad i did as it appears the head gasket may have gone, so i figure ill do ring's and mains whilst im there.
now i have found main bearings, some of them appear to have a bit of heat wear on them it's a dark/blue colour, (hard to see in the dark) but also majority had scratches worn into them, now i figure it could just be a bit of sh*t that found it's way in.
so my question,
is it worth dropping the crank and getting machined, and what would be involved in replacing i.e. rear mains ect ect, ive fresh up engines but never dropped a crank before,
youre thoughts??

I have just done this on mine (304)
Bearings were scratched which = rooted.
Crank is piss easy to take out.
Cost me $240 to get it machined and $160 for new 10 thou undersized main and big end bearings.
Simply coat in assembly lubricant ($30 at most auto shops) and re assemble then torque up.
Note which shaoe bearings go where on the crank journals.
Mark or better still, engrave all the big end caps with piston number and an arrow facing forward on the motor, likewise with the mains caps, but they should already be embossed with numbers and arrows.
Timing cover gears and harmonic balancer need to come off too.
Just align the crank and cam gear marks with the bright chain links on reassembly and the timing is set.

yep sounds pretty simple,i don't think ill have much problem, just never done it and don't have a manual to follow, are there marks on the timing gears already, they always have done before, so imagine the 308 woulndn't be any diff.

also if your running a manual... make sure you mark the clutch assembly so you bolt it up to the flywheel the same way it came off or youll stuff up your balancing!!!!!!

There is a gregorys style manual on building Holden V8s that can be had at Autobarns or Super Cheaps for about $30.
