2.8 over heating

Post by dan_2818 »

Got a 97 2.8 hilux that keeps geting warm.

Travelling around oz in it at the moment, so its got a big alloy canopy with roof top on top
Its got 33 muddies, turbo, 3 inch exhaust. 240,000kms

It just starts getting warm when i get going in fifth gear. If i back off and go down to 4th it cools down straight away.

Alot of works been done recently trying to solve it,
Brand new radiata, thermostat, circulation of cooling system ok. water pump done 40,000 km ago
heads been off, tested, machined and new head gasget.
Injectors just been done, timing ok.
filters all ok.

any ideas??? been chasing it for a while and its getting real expensive, especially as im not working full time.

Brand new radiator... hmmm.

where from?

I had the same truck, exact same problem. I put a new rad in chinese cheapy from ebay.

If anything it got worse, the radiator guy was suprised, and refunded my purchase price towards getting my origional radiator recored using an aussie core (4 core instead of 3).

never looked back, never got warm ever again - towing, offroad, everything was sweet.

When I weighed the chinese rad against the origional toyota one it was significantly lighter = less copper less heat transfer.

The ad said 15 fins per inch in the core, but it only had 11. the toyota one and the recore both had 14/15.

Intertestingly apparently all radiators (appart from custom jobs) premade are imports, but all cores s such tend to be ausie made - so a recore tends to mean a better product.

Hope it helps.

Its running low boost, about 8 psi i think, without a pyro or boost gauge.

Fan seems all good. And its got the shroud.

Will have to look into the bigger radiator. Do you know how much that cost you?

Thanks for the ideas so far.

Sounds pretty typical.
lower rpm, load it up, and get fuel into it, and it gets hot.
Back one gear, less load on motor, higher rpm, less fuel, then temp comes down.

If your chasing things, look at its fuel delivery on large throttle settings, ie pump setting. sounds like its getting a bit too much, thus temps come up.
How was the pump setup, I think thats where your temp is coming from.

If it was me, just run in 4th for now.

I had the same problem when I had the turbo fitted to my 2.8, I spent a fortune on it had radiator made bigger, fuel pump compensator fitted so as to make sure air fuel mixture was correct at all different revs etc etc etc but it made no difference to it getting hot under load or highway speeds over 90kph.

Ended up getting rid of the Lux and bought another later model, stupid me fitted another turbo all professionally done again spent over a $1000 just on the fuel pump, and again had the exact same over heating problems once the turbo went on. both vehicles were only running 7psi boost. even fitted a nice big external oil cooler to the turbo and twin thermo's etc but didn't help much in hot weather.

I gave up sold the turbo diesel engine and and fitted an Ecotec V6 , got a good price for the diesel with turbo fitted and it paid for the v6 conversion with cash left over, and I have never looked back it goes heaps better, has more power than the turbo and uses less fuel. (and still runs submerged under water LOL)

Have also come across non gen water pumps with impellors being either.

A: crap design, and flimsy, wont circulate water effectively.
B: impellor depth incorrect, and thus poor circulation.

As already mentioned, ensure shrouds are correctly fitted, 1/4" weather strip self adhesive foam is good to stop leaks.
New silicone oil in fan hub to ensure good air flow.
