All warning lights are stuck on, after big bump.

Post by chunkz »

So going through a water hole I got a massive bump. No idea what it was. But went over it no prolems. Except one.
My warning lights are all stuck on. The ones that come on when you turn the car to on.

Hand break, battery, engine/oil and t-belt.

At the start it would turn off at specific angles however now it's stuck on.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Water in the loom??? (short)

Could also be loose wires under the dash ("angles"...)

You probably won't get anything other than vague answers as we can't see it and it isn't a "normal" fault.

The loom is the collection of electrical cables that run through your vehicle normally covered by electrical tape or plastic shielding (separate from the individual wires).

Mine stay on if Ive been through mud/water, wash out your alternator.
Have the engine running, and hose from the top of the alt to get all the crap out of it, usually fixes it for me.
Might be way off, but its worth a shot.

What engine do you have??
The alternator is usually hanging out very close to the fan belts, it should have a belt running on it.
It should have maybe a couple of wires coming from it, not hoses or lines, just wires.
When you find it, just idle the engine, and point the hose into the back of it, if you see heaps of mud and crap coming out, maybe give it a tap with something.
If it doesnt fix the problem though, Id be looking at the posts above.

Let us know how you go.

HAHAHA wow ok this thread could get interesting.

I don't want to be a kill joy but with asking a question like where is the loom and where is the Alt. You may want to get some one to help you look at it for you and figure this problem out. Trouble shooting a problem like this even with a good sound mechanical knowledge can easily lead to much worse problems and go form being a cheap fix to mega $$$$$ very quickly.

To begin with you should maybe tell us what kind of car you have?
What year it is?
What engine you have?
Is it auto or stick?
How deep was the water?
Is there any other weird problems like the dome light staying on or headlights dim?
Any other weird things like this happen in the past?
Have you checked the basics? (if battery is tight, fuses)

I am not trying to sound like a ass but yahh this is not a noobi thing you should be diagnosing off a website.

What year it is?...... 1999
What engine you have? 3ltr Hilux. After market turbo
Is it auto or stick? Manual
How deep was the water? Lower bull bar. Although flowed over bullbar.
Is there any other weird problems like the dome light staying on or headlights dim?
Any other weird things like this happen in the past? Hand break has almost gone to shit. And got a clunk on take off.
Have you checked the basics? (if battery is tight, fuses) not thoroughly. However I did lea. Out the engine.

It's cool I don't think that you're an arse (ass is American :) ) I do know the basics but I don't trust myself.

Pop the bonnet and have a mate, show you the alternator, then hose it out, you might have carp in there.
It could be a long shot, but thats what I do, my dash lights come on and stay on after going through water or puddles too quickly.
I hose it out, and it comes good.

If it doesnt fix the problem, then Id be asking more questions.

Turns out the alternator was not charging the battery, which is why all the lights were on.
