Diagnosing broken diff gears??

Post by Elmo »

Hey lads, Suspecting i have some busted teeth in my rear diff but its one particular part i've never had break before so not 100% sure...

Has a definate knock knock knock knock knock knock knock style noise that is directly related to wheel speed, the sort of noise you would expect from missing or broken teeth, but if throw the clutch in or even just back off the throttle the noise disappears completely

Also it has just the slightest hint of crunching metal at very slow speeds, but almost impossible to hear that unless window down and poking head out...

What you reckon? Broken teeth???

Just wanted other opnions before i go and spend money on another centre... im pretty sure im on the right track

Cheers

Could be in the gearbox if the clutch is changing the sound but more likely the rear diff. Drop the oil it will tell you.

mmmmm thinking thats the plan for this arvo, bout to go pick up dudelux's centre so i have a spare just in case... Just hope its nothing in the Airlocker

I discovered though its the opposite in reverse, under power there is no noise, good as gold, but when throw the clutch in and coast the noise comes back...

Anyway, off to get parts and oil, see what happens

Basic assumption made that you heve determined that the sound is coming from the rear of the vehicle and not underneath/front?

Could be rear driveshaft Ujoint flogging itself out.

Ring would be one clunk every wheel rev, and pinion or Ujoint would be 4-5/wheel rev. Get someone to walk beside the vehicle and pinpoint where the noise is coming from while going on/off the accelerator

Damage report in... All pulled apart and was actually a few different things..

3 teeth broken on the crownwheel, damaged uni + slip yoke and damage to the Airlocker

So bit more extensive than just teeth, but in the process of repair... Got a centre off Dudelux so have gears just waiting on parts from ARB for the locker and should be a runner

Now to find a new rear tail shaft

Thanks for the input fellas
