80 series front axel oil seal

Post by Triple B »

Hi guys. I've got a full time 80 series, 92 model GXL

I've just blown a CV. After I pulled the CV out and the axel seal to replace I’ve notice that steel oil slowerying down thing inside has fallen out. Sorry for not knowing what I’m talking about.

I'm guessing that they put steel seal thing inside to slow the oil down before it hit your main seal. It only sits about 2 to 4 inches in from your axel seal. (Going off the other side)

My question is. Do I need it? Should I replace? Put it back in? (I think I should). I’m guessing you have to pull the diff centre out to get to it? But how do you get into it to put it back it? On the long side it sits in a fair way and if I need to tap in back in not sure how I’m going to get a hummer and bar on to it?

If anyone have any advice I'll greatly appreciate it.

Thank You.
Shaun.

If it's what I think you're talking about, it would be worth trying to fix. It probably stops some amount of oil hammering the seal, but it also serves as a guide for putting in the axle shafts. Without it you would likely damage a new inner seal trying to lever the shaft into the diff gear.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
