Engine & Rad Flush After Oil In Water????

Post by Surfin Alec »

Hey guys,

Anyone know of the best way to flush out goop from the engine and radiator after oil got in the coolant???

A couple weeks ago I found some major goop in the radiator of my '97 80 Series with a 1HDFT engine. The local diesel mechanic was hedging bets that it wasnt the head but a leaking gasket on the oil cooler on the side of the engine.

We took off the cooler, pressure tested it and replaced gaskets etc. I had the radiator flushed and cleaned and the mechanic flushed the engine but there is still a LOT of goop around.
After about 60k's I went to give it a flush with the hose and still there was about 4mm of good under the top of radiator I could feel with my finger and the same in the top hose.

I really need to give it a good flush so I can eliminate further problems like the head / gasket.

I was thinking about a water based degreaser but the mechanic thought otherwise.

So please post up suggestions so I can put this problem to bed and I can sleep at night again.

Cheers, Alec

Well i remember when we were at holden they had a tub of washing deterget sitting there. I'm not recommending you do that though cause i can't see it doing much else other than filling your block with more crap!

Are all the hoses ok? Cause if you leave the oil in there too much longer it'll soften all the hoses and cause all sorts of dramas when you least expect it.

A liquid degreaser would certainly help but your gonna have to flush it without running the engine otherwise the water pump will just froth it all up and your engine will just end up a bubble making maching

We use wynns radiator flush. It's pretty good. Make sure your heater is on when you use it.

Sounds like you are still leaking oil into the coolant

Where do you get the Mangold stuf??

I tried the Wynns Radiator Flush. The bottle says leave for 10mins, I left it in while driving for an hour and it did nothing. didnt move anything.

Going to have to step it up as I want it cleaned out so I can see if it is still leaking or not.

All the goop in there is like green snot from oil / coolant. I am only running water now, so I need all the green goop out.

Cheers.

Hey mate, i had the same thing on my patrol, transmission cooler was leaking into the radiator, a pain in the ass. I used radiator flush (can't remember which one) but did it 5 times and again 500k after. The oil is now finally gone.

you use front loader washing powder as it doesnt froth up. one coffee cup and run it for about 15 minutes and then flush. make sure you drain all coolant before flushing (fill with fresh water)
