will gq gear box fit in gu patrol?

hi,

just wondering if anyone has done this conversion.

i know the gq box shift is much further forward and doesnt line up with the hole in the floor but i have heard rumors that people have fitted the gq box into gu patrol.

is it possible to swap the top part that unbolts off the gu box onto the gq box so as the shifter is in the right position?

any info would be great.

I thought they were the same gearbox with the only difference being that there isn't a bolt on plate for the PTO outlet on the GU gearbox.

I fitted one to my GU. I went from GU auto 4.5 petrol to GQ manuel 4.2 Diesel and I had no issues. Yes the GQ and GU box have different top hats and I have heard of people trying to do the swap with no luck. I can take a photo if that helps. ;-)

do you have a body lift in your car?

i helped a mate put a 4.2 gu motor and gq manual into his 2.8 gu and where the gear shift comes up it was hard up against the trans tunnel and way to far forward. he ended up buying a gu gearbox and putting that in instead.

is the gq gearbox different between series 1 and 2?
i've got a series one 4.2 petrol gq box that i was hoping to put in my 4.5 auto gu.

is there any difference between the 4.2 petrol and diesel gearboxes?
pretty sure the gq box we tried to put in my mates gu was a diesel 4.2 box.

I do not have a body lift and there is no rubbing in the tunnel. If your local to brisbane you are welcome to come and have a look. I will take a couple of photos and email them to you.

All photos the gear stick is in 5th gear and you can see the pto cover on the box too.

Yeah mate. GQ 4.2D then turboed it. Even the clutch pedal out of the GQ bolted up but had to cut and move the pedal over a little.

A GU box will fit into a GQ easier than the other way around. Done it to mine with some reshaping of the GU transfer lever. The tcase lever and mounting points on the gbox is different to the GQ box and lever.
The gear selector housings aren't interchangeable but the gear shift sticks are, with a swap of the bush on the bottom of the stick. The GQ has a larger diameter bush but still fits both sticks on the ID.
Internally the TD42 boxes are pretty much the same as the TB42, 4.5 and 4.8. The GU boxes have a slightly different internal casting inside the transfer case though.
