on my 79 cruiser there is a sound like a bomb ticking away..almost like a very loud clock right behind the glove box dash area. it only lasts for 5 minutes once i start up but then goes away? It is consistent with the amount of revs the motor is doing but i do not have to be moving for it to happen. relay maybe? its coming from somewhere in this area in the pic but i cant tell if its external or internal. Pretty sure i can feel it if i put my hand in the glove box.

From memory your glow plug relay is behind there (if it's a diesel)
indubitably

Re: what do you think this noise is?
If the ticking increases and decreases with engine revs then I'd be surprised if it's a relay. Most likely an exhaust manifold/engine pipe leak. Look for black sooty deposits around the manifold/engine pipe. As exhaust gets hotter it expands and shuts the leak up. Most likely at the manifold to head face.

petrol 2f motor so not that dlux.
no vacum or manifold leaks ray from what i can tell. this noise is certainly more electrical sounding . i have found a relay up under tyhere behind the glove box just then but will have to test it out with a passanger next trip. i did learn one thing just then, the car had a good 15 minute drive . I stopped for 30 seconds and restarted and the noise came back so its not engine temp related.
