Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Sounds like another failed attempt of a standard class winch comp.
We need more interest! because this could go places pending on rules.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
dont believe its a failed attempt yet i heard its just sorting out insurance issues while trying to keep costs down for competitors that is an issue. but stay tuned is definately still on the agenda. the more people to put there hand up as intertested that would help to spread cost and keep prices down so if ur keen let everyone know.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Fingers crossed they sort it out!!
I was really looking forward to it no need for a cage, cars driven there and hopefully driven home!
If it goes ahead ill be there for sure

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
This event is still in the making, the insurance to cater for a event is the frustrating part, but being sorted. The logistics and planning is time consuming to say the least, so patients is required.
A plan of the event has to be written up to be able to source insurance to make all parties happy.
Rules have to be written up and some of those have already been written in the now winch challenges.
This event will try to cater for most, but mostly around the everyday 4by with limited modifications.
The event is to cater for the production 4by not the extreme one, so as i said won't cater for everyone.
Kind Regards.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Just a question to those 4by's with winches....when do you use your winch and in what situation do you use them?
Kind Regards.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
this is the sort of comp i would be interested in. specially in the seq corner!
33's, small lift, unlocked and no cage needed, those sort of guidlines. so weekend joe can take his fourby out, have a bit of fun competing against his mates and other similar wheelers. And best of all not need to spend 50k plus building a truck for it....
sounds like a sweet idea to me

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
When we get stuck and a mate cannot snatch strap us. We only use it when we cannot reverse out of a situation or when we cannot drive any further forward after having a couple of attempts at driving it.itsracin wrote:Just a question to those 4by's with winches....when do you use your winch and in what situation do you use them?

I use the winch when I get stuck... Im really keen in a event like this, But I have v8 in my patrol and small mods and winch...will this effect my entrance having this size engine .... Im not interested in extreme side of things , just out for fun and getting out there with a different kind of comp with the challenge of winching.......itsracin wrote:Just a question to those 4by's with winches....when do you use your winch and in what situation do you use them?

are you limiting the class by the tyre size (eg 33")??
mine has 35"tyres & 5"lift standard 4.2 dsl (non turbo) winch & lockers,& internal cage, 2/3's of the body is still factory shape (as per CCDA production class guidlines), this vehicle is being built to CCDA production class specs for events like Out back challenge "production class" will it be too modded for your production class,??
...im also not interested in extreme class ... but would be keen to play in production class

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
hi i've competed in a few so called novice events and these are some rules i recon need to be changed.
1 all engine mods dot approved running on pump fuel, no nos methol etc
2 no cage needed but can have
3 only rear locker no fronts but can be disabled
4 max 35' tyres must be covered by flares no exception even i you have a tube tray
5 winch has to be off the shelf no twin motors etc air free must be disabled
6 suspension has to be of origional configuration no coil overs etc
i also think most hills have to be drivable mabye 2 or 3 winch hills mabye with obsticals so its not just a straight pull up. no water deeper than waist deep not sure about gps yet i know some love it but i'm not converted yet. i hope others like this kind of format.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
IMHO, this style of comp. has a lot a merit for competitors.
Don't, however, waste too much time on vehicle specs., but think carefully about what are the important parts that could determine a winner or a loser.
Seems to me that a "control" winch.......say a Tigerz or Ironman 9500 with NO mods, (see who'll do the best deal), with, maybe, a "control tyre", just like V8 Supercars, are things that are easy to "police"............
$700 + $1200 for a winch & tyres (subsidised) is probably cheaper than a CDCA roll cage, and almost guaranteed to make the results closer!
I don't think that a V8 powered winch truck will do a section much faster than a Sierra if the winch line speed is controlled.

But the problem with that is for the people that already have a truck that is setup. We have already spent the money on winches and tyres and i for one cannot afford to spend any more money. Maybe if it was just limited to a maximum sized tyre and say a high mount winch with a 6hp motor just my thoughts anyway.
Cheers

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Sorry 1Tuffrover, I must have misunderstood the OP. I thought he was suggesting a comp for entry level competitors, those that may have a basic vehicle with a small lift and basic recovery gear. I didn't realise that the 6hp highmount Warn was regarded as "entry level". Although I am a Warn dealer, I haven't sold a high mount for a couple of years, because the customers we deal with in the country tend to buy an Ironman or a T-max for (well) under $1000 for casual wheeling.
So the options are that YOU spend $700 or all the other competitors spend over $2000............hmmm, that's a hard one..........
BTW, I had a similar conversation with MMM a couple of years ago and he didn't agree either.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Getting insurance for events is not as easy as one would think, you need to write a plan and everything needs to be noted.
Working on this slowly.
Well this event is based around the average Joe Blows everyday driver with limited mods.
The suspension will be that you can drive on the road legally…..2” lift and if a letter of approval from Queensland Transport Dept, then a 2” body lift is ok.
With tyres well not all vehicles can run a 33” tyre on the street legally, so the biggest tyre for that model from standard will be.
Winches are standard with a focus on other brands other than warn.
When the words….winch challenge…. Is used we think hill to climb, what happen to getting stuck in sand or axle deep mud, or a obstacle to get around, doesn’t have to be up that hill.
The event is similar to tough track with0-1000 point markers, but with a mandatory 5 winches anywhere along the track, but once all those winches are used then you get only 2 attempts to get going with the 1st one being counted, then you stop at that point and then next vehicle on track.
This event not for everyone, and as we have seen before that this can open the top of a can of worms….. have I done the same?
Kind regards Chad.

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
Hi, I do agree that there is a need for a very basic 4x4 comp but i still think that there is also one for more modified trucks but not full blown trailer trucks ones that are still driven around but mainly on weekends. check out the lowmead comp if you's can i'll be competing in a truck thats less than $20 000 so baisicly an entry level truck against some very well presented extreme winch trucks. hopefully it will hilight some areas that can be changed. may not win but i'm gonna have a hell of a lot fun trying.

Have tried to put that together with a very fair set of rules that would have kept cost down and vehicle's legal.
Guess what, very few takers, not even enough to cover Insurance.
Keep at it Chad, I wish you well. But remember the organiser sets the rules, because you will find that most of comments here, are made by people who when you have an event will not enter anyway.
Cheers from Thailand

Re: Expression of Interest everyday 4x4 winch challenge
i also agree with dave you make the rules and as such you need to stick to them. the people that r serious will come those that just wish to be heard but not seen dont count as they wont enter, if you get to many people involved it will get to confusing and to many arguments. remember trhe kiss rule and dont overcomplicate it, that will make it a better event and willget more interest from beginners.

Your figures are wrong
My winch owes me $900 and that includes a new motor and the buy price it's an older one but has not done any work
These are all ideas I don't understand why everyone would need to spend $2000 why not run what you have and have some fun. It's an event for everyone to have a go at. Time will tell what the rules will be!

This all sounds very interesting, and I like most people cant afford to buy new stuff off the shelf, so I bought and old 24volt highmount for $350, I then bought a second hand 12volt 6hp motor for $350 and an albright solinoid off MMM for $200.
So for $900 is my old 6hp highmount to extreme?
I have already done 2 winch challenges with it and its managed to pull the old wagon around and stay together.
i got nothin
