Over drive

For the over drive button which is better to use ON or OFF? Im just asking because today i noticed that in overdrive at speeds around 50-70 its shifts down from 2500rmp almost down to 1500rmp. When swtiched off at that speed its stays around 2500rmp. Which would be better to use? Also which is better with fuel? Now i know answer would be overdrive because it drops back to 1500rmp but if i give it a little gas it will jump back to 2-2500rmp.
So which would you guys recommend?

Personly, I dont drive a diesel, cant abide the smell from them and there is no dirty'er places that fuel stops that the pumps dont work properly and over run onto ones shoes and trousers, BUT getting back to your question, you have answered it yourself, I know a few guys that have these in dieseland they tend never seem to touch the button on the gear stick, as long as its working OK, BUT, the only time you may want, to take it out of O/D is if your speeding down a steep hill and wish to use the engine brake, by dropping it out of D into 2, hope this answers your question.

I think it depends on the vehicle. in my 80 series cruiser, the stupid thing will go into overdrive just under 60kph, and lock the torque convertor making it lug around at 1400rpm. That's in the standard mode. I drive in the 'power' mode all the time though. Still it drops into overdrive at 50-60, but doesn't lock the converter. When you hit a bit of a hill you have to flatten it to get it go back to 3rd gear, whereas with overdrive off the power delievery is more instant, and it feels like less throttle input to get moving. Frankly after all this i think it makes no difference to economy until you start driving above 75kph or so with the overdrive off.

So with OD on it's sluggish performance and less engine braking downhill (which I like)
with OD off it's a bit peppier, but more throttle input down hills and theoretically higher fuel consumption

For me it depends what mood i am in. Cruising = OD on, cornering on the bumpstops = OD off.

I only use Overdrive over 60mph, the standard gearing is fine for 50, but around 60 and 70 the revs are a bit too high and the fuel economy gets poor around higher revs, I would suggest 60mph plus only... 70mph is horrible with Overdrive off, the revs are way over 3000!! Guess you just bought the SWB then 4x4boi? ;)

alright thanks for the replys fellas. And chris sadly not yet because the guy who came to check it out, went for a test drive and everything was fine BUT he brought along his wife:D than came the question: howes the fuel compsumtion, littel sctrach here and there..etc so the WIFE diecied that the 3.0v6s 13L/100km s wayyyy to much. So they didnt buy it, the guy was stoked tho he liked very much but the wife said no :D Told them 13liters is pretty good for a car this big and guess wat the answer was to that: Yes but my corolla doesnt eat 13liters. :lol: Big silence from me. ok than you very much. :D so yea that didnt go very well, but i have 2 more guys coming to checj it out, one on thursday and the other on the weekend sooo crossed fingers :D

Ahh women!! :lol: I was talking to one of the cleaners from my work and she was asking me about the MPG and road tax for my 2.8, and I told her 16-18mpg average and £205 per year tax, then I said "I'm really pleased with it my last one was much worse!". The look on her face, then she said "I thought my 28mpg Opel Astra was bad!!" The diesels are pretty good, about same MPG as a Toyota Landcruiser. The 2.8 Auto sounds MEAN when starting from stopped and giving it good revs, you hear the turbo whine kick in and the intercooler and from outside the car its a nice loud roar! Plus the diesels engines are that little bit more waterproof, I seen a video of Romania Offroad Club going through a river, all the Pajeros made it (the Jtop ended up with a huge puddle in the back) and then came the V8 petrol Jeep Wrangler, few meters end.... silence, that was the end of his offroading for that day!! :shock:

hahah yeah :D and will in my opinon pajeros are pretty good 4x4's they will go anywhere where the bigger 4wds go with the right setup. My neighbour was looking into buying a 4wd not long ago, he drove my paj and said yea its good but wants something with a bigger motor, so he ended up buying a 1998 Ford explore 4.0L and so far he has a 1.5inch lift and some all terrain tyres. where i want to go with this is that he went out for a run in the bushes and about and hour later he rang me to get the tow cable becuase he got stuch in a water crossing :D now the crossing isnt that big on my paj the water doesnt even reach the bottom of the door. So to get him out i had to go threw the crossing to pull him out because he was nose in and after i pulled him out had to go back threw the crossing while pulling him and had no problems at all :D so i still vote pajero! :armsup:
