I don't know if they even have a standard one do they. My mates 4.2 diesel thought he had one but it was an engine oil cooler. Bit weird! I think its worth the money to upgrade or fit one if it doesn't already have one. It will help to keep your auto running strong.

the efi gq autos have a tranmission cooler built into the radiator.
This makes the radiator much dearer to purchase..... If you have a look under neath you will see the lines coming from your auto to either end of your radiator.
I have fitted a second pwr external cooler in series to the radiator one - after the radiator one, before the fluid goes back to the auto.

same engine and auto as you and i got 2 aftermarket coolers and a shift kit fitted. never had any dramas with overheating, but a couple of my mates have cooked their autos with no additional coolers or shift kits etc. im fitting an aftermarket temp guage in a few weeks just so i can keep an extra eye on the temp.

The mate I mentioned earlier has the factory auto trans cooler in the radiator and has problems when towing his boat, the water temp (radiator) goes thru the roof.
I would have thought to run an additional cooler you would have been better off to run before the radiator to prevent water temp spiking under load.
I think you will find from what i'm told the small factory cooler is an engine oil cooler and stop's at the oil filters on the side of the block.
My GU runs a decent factory trans cooler and despite the auto tran shop saying it is sufficient I am still going to upgrade when funds allow. For the sake of 500 odd dollars and decent service intervals you cant go wrong. Don't know about you guys but its cheap insurance compared to a rebuild.

agreed. i towed my mates big GQ out to cruiser park on the weekend (2.5hrs) there and back and had no troubles with overheating etc. definetly additional coolers are worth it

they reccomend to fit the extra cooler after the radiator.
If you cool it first - then the water will heat it back up. no real prob....

But if you cool it afterwards - it will still reduce the running temp of the water - as the whole auto system will be running cooler, hence placing less heat load on the whole system.

I too have cooked an auto - but i am unsure as to its service history befoe i bought it. I tow a big boat with it - and will be fitting a temp guage to the new auto.....
