so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
well its not a big problem but at full lock both ways the tyre just rubs the steering linkage. i put on Mtz,s with sunny rims being sure to get ones that offsetted my tyre out as far as possible but no luck still touches. Do they make a offset steering linkage? im thinking i only need 20mm ?
Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
there should be a screw on your swivel hub that will stop it turning in far enough to scrub, but it increases your turning circle as it takes full lock away from you. i know a mate had it on his hilux, as he told me he adjusted it as his tyre was hitting his leafs, but i havent had a problem so i havent looked into it on my cruiser

Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
This is a known problem with big tyres on a 40 series cruiser, only real way to cure it is to do the 60/75 series power steering conversion.
Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
You might be able to get a better response if you let us know what make/model it is and any other mods.

Change to 60 series steering, get more offset or adjust your steering stops.

Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
When I put in extended shackles mine didn't hit anymore.
The other alternative is don't turn to absolute full lock. It's not that hard.
As a side note, (and I know the Op doesn't have power steer) I was told many moons ago that one should never turn a car with power steering to full lock and hold it there... something to do with rooting the hydraulics. Can anyone confirm or deny?

I think it might only be holding full locks and high revs on the motor. I did two pumps on the lexus v8 in my old 4runner from this when driving around in circles on the beach.De-lux wrote:As a side note, (and I know the Op doesn't have power steer) I was told many moons ago that one should never turn a car with power steering to full lock and hold it there... something to do with rooting the hydraulics. hi i have 84 hj47...
i just put up with it..
havent got around to reducing the bump stops stud yet as the turning circle sucks...
75 series power steering will look into that...
mate has one in his shed....
just swap some work for it i think....
i run 33 12.5 15....bfg muddies....
biggest offset i could get.....
another route is chase down or get made a set to suit..
not worth the coin....and extra strain on bearings?.....axles?? too?
had mine over 10years.....with air con....

Yeah this is true. You shouldn't hold any hydraulic power steeing on full lock for much more than a few secconds at a time because when it's at full lock the pump maxes out and the pressure builds up REALLY high and you are much more likely to bust a hose. Also with all this high pressure and pumping, the whole hydraulic system will wear really quick.
Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
My old fj45 did this but only the slightest bit and not enough to damage the rod end.
I had 35's and a 3 inch lift..
Maybe if you go a little higher its not as bad ??

Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
You have to use a 60 series box on the 40s not the 75 series box, unless you want it blowing in the breeze out in front of the apron.
The 60 series pitman arm is forward of the spindle which means the box tucks away nicely under the headlight.
To the OP, just adjust the stoppers. It's easy.

Don't take life too seriously...it isn't permanent.
Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
thanks to everyone for your replies. Its all good info to get. i will adjust the stoppers if i have any room to move but i would like to go to power steering in the future..along with lift, disc brakes ,chev motor, 5 speed box, spotties, winch, tricked interior,....does it ever stop.
Re: so i went to a 33 inch tire and now i got problems
does it hit those clamps that your arrows point to.. if so u can loosen those and turn flip them over, that will give u another 10mm? or so. just a thought
