HELP - what vehicle should I buy??

Post by Damo4x4 »

Just need some advice on my options....
I am looking for an economical vehicle to use as a 2nd car, but one that could become the family car if our 1st car was out of action for a time. I am tossing up between a Rocky 2.8L TD, a 1.6L Feroza or a 1.3L Sierra. Im leaning toward the Rocky, only for the space inside the cabin, but am worried about owning/running a TD. What do you guys reckon (im only in the market for aroung the $7k mark).

Or I could always go another road car and never get to explore the 4WDing world

GO the rocky champ!!

Sounds like you have almost made the decision!
maybe it would be best to have one of those RACQ inspections done on it first, just to be on the safe side!

welcome to the site!!

Depends on what you are going to be doing. If it's going to be mainly a daily driver with some offroad fun but nothing too serious (ie you don't want to spend too much $$ doing mods) a Feroza may be the way to go as it has IFS and usually more creature comforts.

If you want to do some serious playing offroad, go the Rocky. It's bigger than the feroza inside and has a solid axle front. Detroit lockers are also available for them. Lift is easy as it's springs all round.

Damo,

Value for money and parts availability suggests going Japanese which you have already concluded. I have seen the Rocky and the build quality is good but there have been issues with cracked heads in the diesel.

I don't reckon you could go wrong with a petrol HiLux in that budget and you will find it more comfortable than the Rocky. However, the Sierra is good too. I had an LJ80V (Holden badged Zook with a 797cc 4 cylinder) 20 years ago and it was tough and cheap to run. Just my 3.2175 cents worth bloke ...
