2002 Patrol GU ST UTE ADVICE

Post by christian89 »

Gday,
Im looking at buying a 2002 Patrol GU ST Ute 4.2 TD, im going to look at it tomorrow and have never owned a patrol before and was wondering if anyone knows any little nastys that may not be obvious to look out for. I've been told about the chassis cracking at the back and this thing has been repaired and mod plated. it has arb bull bar, side rails and steps, ipf spot lights, arb front and rear air lockers, arb air compressor, old man emu heavy duty suspension 2' lift, 16' csa alloys with 285/75r16 bfg mud terrain tyres 90% tread, safari front mount intercooler, safari snorkel, duel battery system, full 3' exhaust system, uniden uhf radio. If anyone could give me some advice id really appretiate it.
Cheers

mate thats news to me , ive owned 3patrols before this one and never heard of there chassis cracking, there a solid chassis so if its cracked well it sounds like that truck has gone to hell and back. There a pretty straight forward rig, there was a prob with 5th gear stripping on shaft but Im pretty sure this was fixed in the 02 models, was a prob in 2000 models. If it has aftermarket turbo just try and make sure what boost it has been running i guess, you dont want somethin thats been runnin 30lb. but if its all good , go for it :)

Regarding the cracking, it's common on the GU's for the rear coil hats to crack away from the chassis, often pulling a section of the chassis with them. If it's been repaired and braced properly then it should be better than new but I'd e checking it out pretty closely. Other than that, the 4.2 GU's are a pretty rig. Just check the usual, oil leaks, bushes and uni for wear, gearbox holding gears, synchro wear, maintenance intervals (every 5000km for oil and filters) and for any major offroad damage.

check for rear main leaks, and general gearbox out issues as these do happen a bit on patrols, and its a big job to pull out a gearbox on them.
some patrols seem to run hot - so take it for a good run up a long hill if you can.
x2 about the rerar coil hats very common. the heavy duty suspension is often part of the problem. too stiff.

I cant remember if it was fixed in 2002 or if 2002 were all ok as far as the weak 5th gear goes.

out of curiosity whats it worth? (its practically my ute) lol :D

Don't confuse oil around the back of the motor/front of the gearbox for a rear main leak, when you change the oil filters it all runs down there and is absorbed by a sponge. I degrease the shit out of mine but it still has a lot of black oil residue there.

Cheers everyone, very helpful info. It's a very straight machine I spent three hours going over it, couldn't get it to overheat either. He asked for 29500 and I chopped him down to 27000 very easily but he won't budge anymore and I'm having trouble chippin him on anything as it's tidy as

Mate if its very good nick and low kms its maybe worth that but a little expensive.... we paid less for a vgc one with 160 kms and heaps of bits. Just means you need to bargain more!
