Am I crazy? ...thinking of selling the 40 for a GU

Post by De-lux »

So I've been recently thinking of selling the BJ40 and saving some pennies for a 2002-ish Patrol GU 4.8L petty...

I'm kind of getting sick of having the fun toy (the cruiser) sitting in the driveway almost half the time on bricks waiting on parts etc... And when we go camping or away for the weekend we have to take the missus' crappy little Feroza (which drinks fuel like a v8).. I'd love to set up a GU for touring.. v small lift, small tyres, fridge, air con, stereo, that sort of shit. Nice and comfy, reliable and simple.

I reckon if I'm not in a hurry to sell I could get a pretty tidy sum for my cruiser, given what I paid for it and what I've spent on it.. maybe about $6000 or more, who knows.

So what do you think OL oracle - am I crazy or is it the right thing to do?

Thought of this too.. but she has said that a GU is too big for her to drive and park, not to mention we'll only get $2k for her Roza

For what it's worth, a few years ago I was in much the same position as you are so I sold my 40 and bought a GQ wagon. The GQ was an awesome truck without a doubt, but not a day goes by that I don't regret selling my 40. Was a heap of shit but I loved that pile.

Yeah I thought that... I'd miss the old girl, but yeah.

I can't stop thinking about just having a nice comfy car that everything works, is low maintenance and is easy to get parts / mods for.. Not to mention nice to travel to and from work daily in.

I'm sick of wearing my suit in the elements going to and from work in the door-less & (practically) roof-less 40

For the 5-6k you will get for it, it's not worth selling. Just wait a little longer or borrow a little more and keep the 40, you will regret getting rid of it.

We all get attached to our trucks, so thats the hardest part letting er go haha.

But way it up, do you want comfort, ac, closed cab with mod cons etc etc or stick it out with the bare bones 40?

I used to own a zook that was locked and lifted and rough as guts. Loved it to bits but started thinking more like you are now. Moved onto a lux ( yeah real big step up haha) which was more comfy and had a few more mod cons like ac and power steer. best move ever

I think comparing a zook to a 40 is blasphemy! You're not just talking about sentimental value, you're talking about a piece of motoring history and good ones will become harder and harder to find in good condition in years to come. The zook is a great fourby, don't get me wrong, no comparrison to a 40. Just my opinion.

I had a fj40 and upgraded to a GQ 4.2 turbo.

I gave the 40 a hard time off road and was on the bricks constantly

I give the GQ death off road and yet (fingers crossed) to break a thing in 3 years

Best thing I did. Get the 4.2 TD if you can. Coils, air con space... Wont be going back thats for sure.

Yeah I wouldn't rush to sell it.. I'd wait for the person that would be keen for it.

And yes, it had a roof and doors when I bought it :finger:

I'd love to keep this truck and pass it to my kids or soemthing like that... surely it'll only increase in value, both sentimental and financial!

But yeah, I think I'm keen to buy something with the fat man creature comforts.

keep the 40. sell the feroza and buy a cheap gq wagon as a tourer. throw the Mrs in a gu for a test drive and then throw her straight in a gq, they feel heaps smaller. you will regret getting rid of the 40 but will enjoy the comforts of even a cheap gq. my 25c anyway.

yeah I have considered that Purplebus, but to be honest (and I'll probably get hosed for saying this) but I hate the look of GQ's, not to mention the bogan stigma that comes with owning one! :finger:

couldnt have said it better myself!!!

fix your FJ40. stop letting la fonda kill the suspension and enjoy the 40.

a GU 4.8 will drink fuel like a beast too.

summer, soft top 40... life doesnt get better.

Fine I will stop drooling over your 40, wipe the saliva off my keyboard and weigh in.

Dont know!

helpful huh.

I have a td42gu and grew up in a gqtd42. I had a modded 40 (but never got it running  )

The gu is very livable, personally i wouldnt want a 4.8 for a daily as it would cost a bomb in fuel.

mine is a daily, a work truck and a weekend toy - it does it all and is fairly comfortable - I say fairly as it is nothing on a nice xr6 or similar but for a solid axle truck its good.

I would love a bj42 but cant justify an extra non essential car so have the patrol to do it all.

In reality the patrol will be a nicer car but you will always miss the 40.

whats more important sentimentals or life style i guess is the question.

I don't think this truck holds a spot that dear to me...

I think I want a nicer lifestyle... and mod cons.

I'm thinking I'll get the GU and perhaps down the track (i.e. when I buy a place with shed) I'll get a zook etc for a fun toy.

Not too keen on 100 series, I think for the same price I prefer the look of the GU's...

I have a 02 GU 4.8.

It is on 35's and drinks a heap of fuel. I dont use it as a daily though so i dont really care.

Really good to drive though and i doubt ill sell it for a long time.
