Wheel base

Post by Willy Hilux »

How much wheel base is too much for a comp rig ( tough truck style tracks )???

Mine is 113" but I want to push the front forward for better aproch angle. Is this getting too long??

Hmm - i think there is no perfect wheelbase. It depends always what size of tyres you want to run.

The wheelbase avarage in TT10 was 107" so far i remember.
It will be every year a bit more. Not long and we will reach the US standard anyway.

But 113+" wheelbase is asking for 40"+ tyres.

Far more logical to talk about ramp over, approach, and departure angles, CoG, and wheel travel, as these are the things that matter. As noted depends on tyre size to a large extent, ie a Zook on 37's would be a different prospect to a Patrol on 33's. You just empirically know the Zook would be better on the 33's as a package and the Patrol on 37's, and that both would then be "in proportion". Too short w/b and high (overtyred) and you're at the "top heavy" point giving you minimal ability to deal with side-slopes and steep inclines, too long w/b and low (undertyred) and you have clearance/ramp-over issues.

"Best" wheelbase = "best" 4WD. There isn't one, as all versions come with compromises.

I agree that there is no "perfect" or "best" wheelbase, but all the same I would myself reply that 113" is already getting pretty darn long.
This is not legal advice.

Ready for this? My wheelbase is nearing 130" but my approach and departure are near vertical on a full bodied full chassis dual cab lux.am running 38.5's now but looking into 40-42's.
On a plus side I have flat belly, spring perch sliders And have moved everything that could get caught.
It rarely gets stuck even when bellied out cause it slides over.

I'd like to reduce wheelbase but it would be sacrificing approach and departure.

Isn't yours cut down into a ute with only 2" lift though mate?mine is a bit higher so where you get bellied my tyres may still be touching.
The only reason mine is so long is because I havent cut the chassis or the body and to fit the tyres it needed to be stretched.

Mine is at 105 with 40s and about 20inch belly height . +90 approach and departure ..

it really depends what you do , theres really more to wheelbase .... tyre size , belly height , front and rear steer ?, approach and departure .. what you wanna do with it ? crawl , winch truck etc

Well I don't think I'm gunna get it any shorter. :? Might stretch the front 2-3" max. Which will be about 115-116" wheel base. Too much work to pull the rear forward again to shorten up. Just like to get a better approach angle without goning to 40's. Going to 40's would be a nice option though.

you want 79-80" like my zuk  on 31s.has a great approach angle and never gets hung up on the fangs :finger: i dont do comps like yourselves but my shorty is great in gullys etc but scares me climbing and dropping down steep walls then there is my lux also stock wb at the 113" and climbs never seem to worry you

but from what i have seen in mates cars some just very modified trail cars/dailys to comp cars(not really crawlers tho) i would say between the 100 to 105ish works well.So buy a rangie or a surf

If you could be bothered to play around with the tray and get rhett onto the job moving the front diff forward and then bringing the back forward whilst losing some chassis would look great and work well im sure.

Have thought about that but will cause the links to be on the wrong angle to line up with mounts. More cutting and shutting. :bad-words:

just move the body back a couple of inches Aaron.
if you add more length your belly plate will have to be a whole 2400x1200 sheet so you slide over everything. :finger:
anywhere between 95-110 is good for 37s
in tuff truck 2010 the average WB was around 108

Team Hazard from 2010 Tuuf Truck runs 87inch wheel base with 44's, but it sits on its ass a little, will be stretched to about 97in shortly.

Mine fits in a standard garage also on 42's with an exo cage.
