Range Rover Diesel Conversion

Post by BabyGodzillaGTi-R »

Hello fellow forumers,
i'm currently driving a 1989 3.5 flapper type maf viscous coupling RR.
The car is basically going fine and hell more reliable than my 4.6 RR but it has dreadful fuel consumption.
So i'm contemplating doing a diesel conversion but i was hopping if i could retain the auto gearbox.

Basically i dont really know where to start with my research in the quest for dumping in any diesel turbo engine and thought why not check this forum out.
Any websites to recommend?
Cheers.

Opps i forgoten to mention that i'm not from the land down under.
I'm from the land of Simex trekkers and the Rainforest challenge.
:P
Well anyway the engine i thought would be nice for the RR would be a Toyota 1KZ turbo diesel(3litre) or maybe an Izuzu(not sure what model- would be glad if someone can tell me what lump they normally use?) or a 300TDi if i can find one and this particular engine is not cheap.

Anyway the thing is i would like to convert to diesel but retain the auto ZF boz but i heard that apparently there have been issues that the auto box might not be able to cope with the torque and that the ratios are all wrong.
I heard that apparently some work needed to be done on the auto box but i'm not sure what is required which is my main concern.

Any other RR related forums to recommend so that i can post the question above?
Thanks in advance.

Dead right, it was the 4bd1, and there is also a 3.6ltr version called a 4bc1, both came in n/a and turbo. The isuzu would me my choice of diesel just need to find a way of mating it to a t/flite auto !

another deisel option would be to buy the 300tdi and auto out of a wrecked disco. yes the deisel auto is unique to the zf range. ther is a difference inside, i know of a conversion of a tdi manual to auto and a pertol zfr was used, it just didn't perform
the zf can be strengthened, but this combo is$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
i know you're O/S but try ringing the companies listed above.
my preference would be a turbo intercooled isuzu just like is sams mates rangie
do a search for it or someone may list the thread of the buildup.

I have a Isuzu 4BE1 in my 110 mated to a LT-95 4sp gearbox. 3.6L 4 cyl with almost the same torque an Kw as the older 4BD1. Read about the same engine put into a RR some years ago.

Actually i meant 4be1 not 4bd1, did you fit it yourself, our was it fitted in place of the 4bd1 that it originally came with ? Would be an ideal conversion for a Rangie but with a blower on it !

The PO did the conversion. Adaptor plate came from Zenith Engineering in Brisbane but I've heard they've stopped stocking them.

Next time your motor comes out (Isuzu = never ), can you make a template.

Think about how much the conversion will cost ;)

And how much fuel that would buy

Will you recoup your costs, is it worth doing if its already as reliable as you say :?:

like all the money would go to fuel, you'd piss it all against the wall. :D

that's why started my conversion, to curb my rampart alchoholismem ;)

As I said before I have motor, gearbox and transfercase But these are currently in my project car, put I have decided to "rebuild" my project with afew different things (like gearbox and diff's) I would like to keep the diesel in the project but do plan to run at least 100:1 lst low.

So I'm trying to decided if I keep the RR V8 on gas as daily driver or go to 300tdi and put the V8 in the project

N.B around town the V8 on Gas is cheaper to run than the 300tdi would be.

How many Ks on the 300TDI engine ? they are really only good for 300K before you need to do a major rebuild (IMO of course)

Oh well i still cant seem to find the specs for the ratios for zf auto boxes for 300tdi diesels.
Or maybe my search skills sucks. I think i'll just keep driving till it dies or my pocket runs out of money. But the latter is more likely to happen.
:bad-words:
Sigh if only i'm some oil shiek.
Besides that i heard that the particular model i'm driving is not really a suitable rig to build as and offroad machine due to the gearbox being viscous coupling and i heard the max reduction gear ration is 29:1 as apparently stated in my Haynes workshop manual. Or is there someone out there to correct me if i'm wrong that auto ZF boxes are pretty adept for off roading and still sufficient reduction gear for the odd very steep hill climb but not to the extremes of rock climbing.
Btw is it possible to bin the transfer case and plonk on a discovery transfer case so that i can get a centre diff lock?

Anyway i'm really hopless with the technical bits, so excuse me.
Hey that aside is there anyone out there in this forum that actually dare bring a MkII RR for offroading? Any idea how do they fare? Coz i've never tried or dared to try bringing a 4.6HSE for really hilly , narrow trails kind of off roading? Or they just still suck coz it comes with TC and centre viscous and hopless overhangs?
Just bear with my crappy ramblings coz my Daihatsu Rocky that i run for extreme off roading is out of commission as i tested the ladder frame chassis and 6 point roll cage accidently. Sigh....
