t3 turbo replacements

Post by 4runnin_lumber_jack »

hi all, my t3 turbo has had it and i'm looking for some advice, i've talked with a turbo mech and he says it'll cost me upto $900 to rebuild the turbo. :agrue: what i was wondering is if anyone knows of a good brand that are fairly cheap, that will bolt str8 on seeing as i need my car all the time and can't afford to have it off the road at the mo.

im in a 92 4runner with the 3l, its a highmount oil cooled system, something that would just switch over would be great.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Tried a second hand Jap import place (usually do motors and other ancillaries)?

Talking to the interweb isn't going to magically change the cost given to you by someone that knows their stuff. $900 is what it costs for a refurb , then that's what it costs. By all means get a second opinion/quote, but that figure doesn't sound too bad.

oh yes of course i understand that $900 is fine i'm not questioning that, i'm merely weighing up options. i realise the cheapest alternative isn't always best, but the info i have the more informed decision can i make, i've blindly given away too much cash as it is. but thank you i will look into the jap market.

Plenty of options.

First, if the wheels and shaft are okay is rebuild it yourself.
Second is recore it, garrett still make replacement cores for T3 turbos (if yours is a garrett and compatible).
Third is replace it with another second hand turbo
Fourth is replace it with something better.

For that price it's worth the gamble. A smaller turbine A/R would be nice, but there's a chance the housings will swap across.
