Suspension set ups
Suspension set ups
G'day everyone, I have a GU ute and i have been playing around with the suspension trying to get the best perfomance off road for high speed handling/bumps as well flex. I was just wondering what people are running in their winch trucks. What size lift? What spings and shocks, rates and valving? What have you found that works well.... or doesn't work. Any info or pics of your set ups would be great.
Re: Suspension set ups
You need to go for a drive in some comp trucks to feel the difference yourself, everyone likes to think they have the best combination but just because their setup suits them does not mean it will suit your driving style, their are so many options and combinations available.
Probably explaining a bit about your truck and what you are trying to achieve, what comps you are doing , driving terrain, setup of truck, weight,if it is speed events, road use, ect will help in some better answers you can work with.

So you can't have the best of both worlds, you will need to decide whats most important and compromise one for the other.

Re: Suspension set ups
ofcourse there is plenty of options inbetween that have 'good' flex and 'good' handling.
but the best handling setup will never be the best flexing setup...
in saying that there are stacks of excellent setups that will preform well in most aspects of four wheelings. Probly need some more info on what you realy want your GU to do. Are you building it as a competitive winch truck? or just a well setup weekend toy and stil using it on the road during the week?

Re: Suspension set ups
I want it to be a kick ass weekend truck that can crawl and flex through the big stuff, handle dirt tracks and ruff stuff at speed + still has some manners on the road. I'm looking at going about a 5" lift, long arm kit in the rear, king 2.5" remote reservoir or bypass shocks
Re: Suspension set ups
Sounds good but I'd keep it lower.
Many people have been running the 3" Old Man Emu "Comp" coils with great results.
I'd go the best shock you can afford - triple bypass if you can.
Custom mount them so they work in the meat of their stroke.
Also have a look at the swaybar that lots of comp nissans run made from 100 series torson bar.
Most run it on the rear to make the vehicle stable in corners whilst still having excellent verticle travel for the ruff stuff.
Heaps of good options. Longarm is good, use custom A frame/4 link to make it great!
Search some Offroad race forums like http://www.race-dezert.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for heaps more high speed info.

Re: Suspension set ups
Been busy today fitting my water 2 air intercooler, got it half done i'll have to finish it tomorrow. Has anyone got some pictures of how they mounted some triple bypass shocks in the front of a GU ?
Re: Suspension set ups
as 'cool' as triple bypass's sound IMO it is a bit of an overkill on std geometry front setups. Generally nissan fronts only use 6-10" of travel before you have to do some creative adjustments .Therefore having 3 stages of compression adjustment on say 5-7" of ride travel (+ 1stage for hyd bumps) means ALOT of setting up - every 1.5 - 2" of stroke! then you go and put shitty OE style springs in it with different rates.... man it makes my head hurt..patrol_uterus wrote:Been busy today fitting my water 2 air intercooler, got it half done i'll have to finish it tomorrow. BUT if you are going all out and will be running it with 10-18" of useable travel then well worth it I reckon.

Re: Suspension set ups
Yeah its not goin to be standard patrol font end, i'm hope to get 14" travel out of the front
Re: Suspension set ups
I'm still no closer to getting my suspension sorted but i decided to paint it on the weekend so that was a big job but managed to get it done and it looks tops, no more plain old white. I have got the water to air intercooler on now too, what is the best coolant to run in it? i'm just running water at the moment.
Re: Suspension set ups
Would 2.0" bypass shocks be enough in the front of a GU TD42t with a steel bar and winch?
Banned
Re: Suspension set ups
My opinion is that 2.0" bypass is too small for a GU.patrol_uterus wrote:Would 2.0" bypass shocks be enough in the front of a GU TD42t with a steel bar and winch?
Patrols are relatively heavy vehicles. I wouldn't go smaller than a 2.5" if I wanted to go fast.
Luke.
Re: Suspension set ups
So would you say a 3" Remote res shock would be a better option?1MadEngineer wrote:

Would be a much more compact install, than 3 stage bypass. I think it would still need a new upper shock mount though. But might allow more room to still have a 3-4" hydro bump stop external from the coil.
As in my case have been thinking about airbags front and rear. Just wasnt sure what to do with bump stops.
Really just thinking out loud, as I am sure I will run 90series Koni's.

Re: Suspension set ups
Ok I can't decide what shocks to go 2.5" bypass or 2.5" smoothies remote reservoir, 12" or 14" in the front and 16" in the rear. Is anyone running the SRC shocks, what do you think of them?

If you are not in a real hurry to make up your mind we are just about to do a u-tube video ( probably 2-3 weeks ) showing the SRC R-Series "adjustable shock" in action , we are going up to cruiser park with "DAN" The parts man to do some hot laps on coopers and the rally cross to show these in action.
Dan is only running them in the front of his patrol but he could'nt believe the handling difference from other shocks he has tried.
We are also fitting them in the rear for this video .
We will have external video , video of the front suspension as well as incab video so the veiwers can really see what is going on and well it will handle.
These will be out of the box no valving changed so you can see how simple bolt on performance you get , no stuffing around going to shops prior to racing setting them up like some of the other shocks imported directly from the states ect.
We are about to release a SRC S-Series "non adjustable shock" and this is why we thought a video will help people see how good they really are.
We have had just awesome results and feedback from customers who own the SRC R-Series Shocks , everyone has loved them.

I tried for 2 months to get some SRC shocks.
Superior engineerings customer service was piss poor.
They've got some good products, but their name is turning to shit in the West

Unfortunately we had way more interest in the shocks than we expected and we were left short of stock many times.
We have been trying to get WA shops to hold Stock for us to save time on delivery but the shops just wait for orders from customers then send the order from us.
If their were more WA shops with stock we could have pointed you to them but unfortunately their was not.

Re: Suspension set ups
Have you offered them stock on consignment?
Might help if you havn't already. It would make it much easier for our local shops to sell and promote a product they have on the shelf.

Re: Suspension set ups
Looks good mate, I have looked at the bolt in's from down south. How do they perform are you happy with them. What size lift have you got and do you know the shock lengths?
Re: Suspension set ups
im running 10" in the front and and 10" in the rear..patrol_uterus wrote:Looks good mate, I have looked at the bolt in's from down south. How do they perform are you happy with them. What size lift have you got and do you know the shock lengths?
10" for the front is more suited to a 4-5" coil however im running 3" it still works well, now the rear will do upto a 4" coil no more.
About the shocks im wrapped they are completely awesome so much better than koni or LTR's wouldnt bother with anything else and not for the price, I got Alan from racebred in victoria to make up a factory looking bumpstop bracket which is really neat and just bolts in. he normally charges about $750 powder coated for this well worth in my opinion.

There was no reason why dealing with you guys direct shouldn't have worked.
Over a 3 week period, i was told 3 times that my shocks had been sent and were on their way.
On the 4th enquiry i was told that no, my shocks hadn't been sent, but you were setting the valving and sending them off that afternoon.
2 weeks later another enquiry and i'm told that you're out of stock, and i'll have to wait for the next shipment to arrive.
Yeah right, i reckon you got a more important customer.
Funny thing is, i'd still have a set of them SRC shocks, coz they're the only product of their kind for Patrols, coz i ended up with a lesser shock.
Re: Suspension set ups
I do remember this order and i think from memory we had a few customers waiting a long time for their shocks , you included and we had to give the shocks to another customer that had been waiting longer, i do not know why you would have been told they were sent but , that would have been a Sales man's error/ mis communicationsteel wrote:SuperiorEngineering wrote:It is dissapointing you could not get the products when you wanted them.steel wrote:I tried for 2 months to get some SRC shocks.

I do not say there are more "important" customers as all our customers are important to us, it's just been unfortunate that there was a customer waiting longer, i would hope if the placeing was revesed you would feel you should get them first.
Any way PM sent to you with an offer for you that i am sure you will be happy with.
