dics brake options for 65 fj40
hi guys, what options are there for upgrading axle asemblys on a 65 fj40,its currently running the original drums all round,i was going to use 60 series axles under it but am led to believe adapting the front in a sua arrangement is alot of stuffing around,if i used the rear 60 axle, which i already have, what model front axle assembly would i need to do a hilux ifs disc conversion to match the width of the 60 rear
also what year model 40 housings would i need if i wanted to use 60 series disc front on and 60 series rear drums
thanks for your time

Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
There is nothing available to match the width of the 60 rear that will fit easily into a 40 front, that I'm aware of.
You can use IFS hilux front hubs to get the width, but this messes with steering geometry.
You can use a 40 housing and a sleeve to make up the length difference and run a longer short side inner axle shaft. This lets the spring perch be where it wants to be and keeps good steering geometry.
You can outboard the front springs to suit the 60 spring pad width.
Hilux and 60 brakes will swap onto any 40 housing, but you might run into problems with spline counts, so later model housings are preferred.. Some grinding of the inside of the knuckle ball is required to clear late model CV joints..
I have opted to sleeve a 40 front housing and get a custom 30 spline inner axle shaft for my 60 width SOA conversion.. This saves modifying the frame, so the conversion is reversible if need be, and keeps good steering geometry.. I'll use 60 steering rods, then eventually upgrade to high steer if i find the need..

Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
ifs hubs work fine it only changes the ackerman ever so slightly
i run ifs hubs on 60 diff under a 71fj40 with 30mm hub blocks ( not spacers) and high offset 15x10 rims no problems

71 fj40 front shackle reversal +3" , 55 rear springs +3", 35 15.5 claws , 60 diff's 4wheel disc's , SOON TO BE WINDSOR V8 + 5 speed

Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
What about the scrub radius, what happens to that?
Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
there has been little if no effect on myn due to tyre size and contact patchvk7ybi wrote:What about the scrub radius, what happens to that?
and i dont run at stupid 40psi on road
just changing to IFS hubs will not change it enough to cause any problems

Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
I run a 60 rear diff and a 70 series front diff with hilux IFS hubs to make up the width, works well. Been like that for over 2 years with no issues.
For disc brakes, if you want grab a complete late model 40 assembly or *I think* a early 70 series will also fit, not to sure best to measure the spring perches.
Probably need to look into how all the steering etc hooks up too.

Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
STOP!!!! Don't cut up a 65 FJ40!!!! Is it already modded? If it's an original car or able to be returned to an original car sell it and Bu one to Cut Up a 65 FJ40 could be worth more than a modded one if it's a nice original car. Post some piccies!
I'm not quitting drinking, I'm retiring at the top of my game - sporting comeback likely.
Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
the 4o is all original except the motor, passenger seat and 2 gas tanks, its rust free but far from pristine,i found it at a local wreckers, already with a 327 chev ,it has 5 hub cap rims, and still has the factory engine mounts,i dont know how to put pics up here, but its similar in apearence to uteds old 40,same green, though mine has like levers to drop windscreen down,as aposed to the knobs u unscrew
Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
i was thinking a 75 diff might work then remembered the swival arm tapers for the TRE's are bigger than the 40's. are you going to put in 60# steer? if so it might work out in your favour.
Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
yeah mate, planning on 60 power steering to
Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
hI,
why not just look for a factory disc brake front end off of an fj40, bj40, bj40, fj45, hj45, hj47........ There's plently of em out there, it should bolt straight it no worries. Oh, and i have one spare if you're interested!

Re: dics brake options for 65 fj40
Can also bolt on hilux hubs and disc brake assemly.
The later model luxs have vented discs and bigger calipers.

g,day ben,i would be interested, but im in melbourne
Not sure hilux discs would bolt up to a 65 model housing,i have a set of 6o diffs hence why i was concidering them, most of the newer 4o stuff folk want to much for,i had a bj 42 parts car i was going to use,but thought id use the 60 series ones
