Firm shocks will help but you do sacrafice ride quality. A good sway bar setup with a disconnect is a better way to go. It would also be cheaper if your current shocks are ok.

I run a rear sway bar. Have disconnects but leave it hooked up all the time. Have 3in springs with "6in" shocks. Get full travel out of the rear before the shocks run out of travel. No issues with body roll. Helps the front end work more as well.

I also run procomp shocks and find bodyroll to be quite bad. I have removed rear swaybar also which would not be helping. I am thinking of some stiffer rear shocks to start with and then it may force the front suspension to do a bit more also.

before the shocks run out of travel? or before the sway bar limits travel?

On my Gu the rear sway bar limits everything first.

sway bars more than shocks...

I run an upgraded front sway with 2" extended disconnects to suit my lift. I also have the factory disconnects with sway at the back. I also run poly's at the back which made a difference.

Mine is more set up for touring but I run a lot of gear on the roof and did suffer massive body roll. Probably no one thing will fix, look at a combination to get the best result.

Have had experience with Procomps and i think they are just too soft and getting rid of them will definitely help. I would'nt suggest Rancho's are any better as i've had them too.
I found the Tough Dogs great even with out sway bars and with 6" lift they transformed the handling - no sway bars and procomps or rancho's in my experience = major sea sickness....

Sway bar. With 5" shocks, if you run extra long sway bar link pins you will still get full wheel travel. If you could modify the sway bar so the links were out of the way then it would be ideal, this is what I am going to do with mine but not practical for everyone.

5" Rear Shocks 735mm extended then Dobinsons shocks will make a big difference. Tough Dog 730mm adjustable shocks can be adjustered even firmer.

6" Rear shocks 765mm extended, then Suspension Stuff Rear shocks will be a much better improvement over Procomps. (Shocks will be available mid December 2010), Tough Dog 765mm adjustable shocks can be adjustered even firmer and SRC adjustable remote reservoir shocks are better again.

8" Rear Shocks (Suspension Stuff will be available mid 2011) but until then you are looking at either Tough Dogs or SRC shocks.

Stiffer coils will make a difference but not as much as the shocks. Polyairs will also make a difference but not as practicall with bigger lifts.
I am not a fan of the Rancho and wouldn't recommend the EFS Extremes anymore.

Cheers

yea im starting to think adjustables either tough dog or src.
thing is u hear tones of ppl winging about tough dog but there half the price of src.
it is a race car so being able to go hard for flat track nd soft in holes would be great.
with 4 inch sus and a 1 inch shock tower lift would 6 inch shocks be the go up front?

Fully extends the shock. Swaybar doesn't limit the downtravel.

I should have been clearer, and it's not as impressive as I probably made it sound. Dobinson GS45-915 - 730mm extended so it's not a real long shock.

I'm the same as above, my rear swaybar doesn't limit the flex with 750mm extremes and 4" coils, much nicer on and offroad with it fitted too.

go with the extra cost of the src shocks. I tightarsed it and went the tough dogs and got 2 trips out of them before they started leaking.they are not even 12 mths old and the top eye broke off 1. no warranty over 2" lift. spend the extra up front so you dont pay twice. the td shocks were a great shock while they lasted but really wish i would of got the src shocks now as that money is in the bin.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..

Just wondering why you don't recommend EFS Extremes?

I have them in both of my GU's and a Mates GQ and they are great!! Firm but the cars all handle well. Don't have massive travel but are pretty stable!!

I agree, EFS Extremes are a better solution to Procomps but for what they cost I am now recommending Tough Dogs. I still sell the EFS Extremes and still think they are a good shock, however I have had a couple of warranties lately with EFS Extremes. They have gone really soft, shocks that are less then 9 months old and less then 10,000km. It took me 2 or 3 months to get the warranty on both occasions because they weren't leaking and didn't look wrong. The customers couldn't wait so I sold them Tough Dog Adjustable shocks and they both said how much better they were. In contrast, in the past 12 months I have sold probably 10 times more Tough Dogs and touch wood the only problem has been an adjuster that snapped off. If I had my way everyone would be getting SRC remote reservoir shocks but hey most of us don't have that sort of cash.

Don't get me wrong, the EFS extremes probably have less warranties then Koni, I wouldn't sell Koni on a 5" lift Patrol (modified truck shock) because of warranties other businesses have had.

my opinion is that shocks aren't there primarily to control bodyroll.

that's the job of a swaybar or the suspension geometry to being with.

I wonder if the Currie Anti-rock style swaybar will become more common in Australia as bogans begin to realise that no swaybars and a million KM of articulation isn't the key to a capable 4wd?

EFS Extreme is a revalved truck shock too. Never had any issue get warranty on products with Carrolls.

I totally agree that a vehicle is more capable offroad with a rear sway bar. Just got to find one suitable for a Patrol that is a bolt on kit.

There was no wait last week for SRC shocks when I purchased last but they do come and go with availability. People do get frustrated when stuff isn't in stock. If we were all millionairs then we could keep millions of dollars worth of stock but we are not.

Yes EFS shocks are a re-valved truck shock. They just run oil and air (old school). No foam, no nitrogen gas. The reason why they last ok and can generally take a hammering is purely on the fact that every component is big in them. Old school but tough.

Worst shock so far for warranties is Boss Adjustable Shocks. Grrrr.
