Rover /toyo truggy HI-ROVER FINISHED (FOR NOW)
Moderator: Micka
Rover /toyo truggy HI-ROVER FINISHED (FOR NOW)
So i am in the process of building a truggy i bought a rangie with a 3.5 in it it is now totally stripped and removed the entire body and have put a hilux ute cab on ,removing the rangie body required a crane removing the hilux cab required 2 people so the weight has dropped drastically ,so Know it is time for setting the hilux body at the right height and position ,i have taken loan of a set of 40 "creepys to stick on so we can set everything in the right place as my plan is to run 40" treps for know we have instaled 6"flexi coils in the rear and 4" coils in the front
the hilux cab doors have been cut down ,all aftermarket gauges fuel /tacho/oilpress/coolant temp/voltage will be moounted in the cluster i am making , my 4 point harnesses will be installed and 2 bucket seats
there is no use in explaining stuff about the full exo cage as it will be built to suit
to the diffs a toyo conversions is going to be done i have already sourced front 4.88 with locker for the front and a 4.88 for the rear so next major expense will be rovertracks toyo conversion axels and looks like the dirty 30 cv will fit
a few starting off pics
as you can see doors are cut down to rock doors already
my 6k budget build
cheers Kelvin

Kelvin the front centre you have is a high pinion?

I think a lada body would have been 137% more pimp!

i know u won't have much power and prolly be pretty light, but do you think the rovertracks conversion will really hold up to 40's? i think u will have to tip toe around not to break shiat, if my junk can break bits on 37's......

Re: Rover /toyo truggy build HI-ROVER
todays progress was very impressive we got the hilux body on and the sterring reconnected up there where alot of holy **** it fits moments with very little modifications a little panel beating on the passenger foot well to fit the cab on past the bell housing here are a few more pics this at the moment is looking very much like a very diferent uniqe crossdresser build at the moment i lent Jaffa's 40" creepy stickys with out the wheel spacers and see how the wheels are out past the side of the hilux cab... picture it with 30mm wheel spacer
i am 1.90m in height so you can see the height of the truck i might need to make a rope ladder to get in
so its definately a cross dresser rangie chassis engine transfercase gearbox toyota cab and axels cv's and diffs and a county bonnet just got to find something from Nissan to put on now
cheers Kelvin

well we are just going to have to see Sam but i dont think i will have to tip toe around be carefull YES the weight of this build is going to be super light even with a full exo cage but am still going to give it faith in his stuffdef90 wrote:i know u won't have much power and prolly be pretty light, but do you think the rovertracks conversion will really hold up to 40's? i think u will have to tip toe around not to break shiat, if my junk can break bits on 37's......

yeah bud i still got it, was going to give it to grizzly ass on the spring trip to scenic but he didn't show, i'll get it to you soon bud, u need it in a hurry?
i like the idea of the tapered defender bonnet, will give good clearence for the front toob fenders - if thats your approach?
geese shes abit high, can u lower the body any more?
re my rear detroit, dunno why the explosion i put it down to landing under a little right foot if it goes again i'll try cryo'd gears, but i thought the front HP would be weaker?
when do you guys hope to be on the tracks? i'm going to start another build soonish with a mate, but with reno's at home, a bub due shortly and xmas it will be a few months of completion....

toob fenders are the way ,as in height yeah it is a bit we going to see how it goes and make provisions to have the option to put a smaler spring size in
but we wil see once the cage ect is on and do the test run then as usually back to rectify a few things
as been on tracks i reckon i we will have this finished in 5 or so months hopefully less as in Greg this xmas hols he is doing his front suspension to fox shocks and Darren has got the grinder out on his beast i know they want to do a few runs in xmas time

Re: Rover /toyo truggy build HI-ROVER
Have you given any thought to splicing a 60 series centre into the Rangie housings?
As mentioned, the 8"CW&P may not be up to 40" stickies. The RoverTracks gear is and the Longfields are for sure, but the 8" centre is the obvious weak link. I assume you're using RAs in the front and want to keep the A-frame rear? This can be accomplished by splicing the larger and much stronger 60 series centre in. Same axles, same CVs...much stronger centre that should wheel 40s all day long.
Or...use a Salisbury rear and 60 series/Rangie hybrid front. Have the 30 spline kit in the front and some 35 spline 1.5" diameter monsters in the back. RoverTracks make these.
Hell...Keith is making my 40 spline axles

A 60 series center is a low pinion diff and can not be used on a Rover housing.Micka wrote:Have you given any thought to splicing a 60 series centre into the Rangie housings?
Only a center pinion or a high pinion diff are possible because the track rod is in the way.
Nissan front center is the go!

Its only impossible if you don't know how to make a high clearance track rod.

we are not using a high pinnion diff for the front we are making our own track rod ......we where thinking of going under with a slight bend this will be a 4 tube memory track rod which will be gusseted,,,,will like to hear about your high clearance one thoMicka wrote:mancap wrote:A 60 series center is a low pinion diff and can not be used on a Rover housing.Micka wrote:Have you given any thought to splicing a 60 series centre into the Rangie housings?

The track rod bends up and over the pinion and back down to connect to the steering arm.mancap wrote:Would you tell me how to do this?Micka wrote:Its only impossible if you don't know how to make a high clearance track rod.

The original toyota conversion that McNamara Diffs did used the low pinion Hilux centres at either end. Perhaps a call to Jeff can help you get a track rod. I know that Keith from RoverTracks makes a high clearance track rod http://www.rovertracks.com/products/steering.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . There is no reason why it couldn't be made to be used with a low pinion centre.
To use the Nissan centre you have to mess with the side gears to allow the use of the bigger 30 spline axles. Probably less work to do it that way, but the low pinion is not impossible.

Re: Rover /toyo truggy build HI-ROVER
so a fair bit of work was done yesterday cut the rear part of the chassis which is not needed so there is no departure angle. And the most important part to make the sliders and solid base for the exo cage to start at ,as the base is the most important lots of work and time went into this ,now that this is done we then removed the cab of again so that we can finish off the strenght welding and high pressure hose the engine chassis ect so its a clean start cab will get the same have to remove the shit that the prevoius owner applied underneath which is all peeling off so get that off and respray underneath black then spray the bonnet and passenger side door the ford V8 blue (same as the rest of the cab),
I have also decided to remove the LT77 gearbox and put a auto in which will be alot better i think.
We also did a cut out for the driveshaft for the future fox shocks with the suspension i will be running first up will not come near hear but the fox will
cheers Kelvin

Re: Rover /toyo truggy build HI-ROVER
Kelvin...do yourself a favour now and save work later on.
Take all of those pre-cast bends and throw them in the bin. They are not good enough for sliders and definitely not good enough to hang a cage onto. I did the same thing a while ago because they were easy and neat, but they are not good enough for our application. You're much better off bending up a 90 degree and using a one piece.
And if you can't be farked changing it, put two more gussets on that slider near the pre-cast bends.
