td42 won't rev past 1800 ????

Post by Project GU »

I have a project GU Patrol td42 1999. After a new chassis, suspension and cab work it won't rev past 1800 rpm. It was running fine before and after the change over but sat for twelve months waiting on the few remaining jobs (king pin bearings, diffs etc). I have emptied and cleaned the tank, new filter, fresh diesel and removed the air filter so I could see into the intake manifold. It just blows unburnt diesel past 1800 rpm and drops revs. It soulds like a timing problem but that has not been touched? I have put a bottle of injector cleaner through it churning around in the block next door, disconnected the exaust (no difference). Could it just be gummed up or could it be something else? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers,
Gary.

It is non-turbo and mechanical injection - no computer!

Add an external fuel supply directly to the pump, if it improves its on the car that is at fault, if not it 's quite possible you have pump issues. Let iy get warm and have it at high idle for 10-20 min to see what happens.

Had a similar problem once. I wold check the gause filter in the injector pump. If you remove the inlet banjo fitting you will find a spring. Remove that and then get a piece of wire ( i use a seal pick ). You might think there isnt anything in there but have a good fish around. Blow this out and put it all back in.

Worked for mine.

I've had a similar problem on my previous patrol, turned out to be air in the fuel line, filled the tank up and never had the problem again.

If it's blowing unburnt fuel past 1800rpm it sounds timing related to me. Check the pump hasn't been bumped or anything during the work done, also try adjusting the fuel on the pump itself and see if winding the fuel up / down makes any difference.

When i replaced my injector pump 12 months ago it took a fair bit of playning to get the mixture right, either no power high up and blowing smoke or lack of power in general.

Thanks guys. Have replaced the filter with a clean tank behind it so should be ok there. Checked the gauze also – it was fine.

I might try routing the intake and return lines into a 20 litre drum of diesel and see what happens. It should eliminate or confirm cracked or crushed lines etc. It does sound like a timing issue but it hasn’t been touched so am not sure about that. After that I might try adjusting the fuel on the pump and see if it makes a difference. It might just be gummed up??

Gday mate, it's only simple and quick, but try taking your fan off your pump and see if revs? Sometimes the vicous stuffs up.

After replacing the filter, removing the fuel tank sender, draining and cleaning the tank and running the engine directly out of a container of fuel I removed the pump and took it to the shop for a rebuild suspecting a siezed advanced piston. After two seconds in the shop the mechanic found the problem: I had my banjo bolts around the wrong way!! I did feel like a goose but at least it saved me a $1 200 rebuild. Injector pumps need to have back pressure and hence only have a pin hole in the return banjo bolt (the inlet has 4 large holes). Hence when the return bolt with the pin hole is in the inlet side it gets enough fuel to idle but not enough to run properly. Am in the process of putting it all back together and am hopeful that all will be fine. Hope that this helps someone in the future. Ciao.

Good to see you got it sorted mate, though things like this are a pain in the ass at the time, you do learn from them!
