Chev diesel V8 --> How much $$$ <-- is it worth it?

Post by Dave Fogwill »

Hey guys,

I am looking at buying a GQ diesel with a cracked head. I was looking at replacing the motor with a standard GQ 4.2, but I figured if I was going to the trouble I may aswell improve the thing a bit. I have looked at the Marks Adapter website and can get the adaptor kit and mounts for a bit over a grand, but there are no prices for the engines...

Also does anyone know how these engines are with fuel economy?

Any help would be great,

Thanks,

Dave.

search the general tech section, there was a LONG thread on v8 Chev Diesels while back.

some very good info.

insurance will be a hassle to get too...
Total conversion will be around $10,000-14,000 for the V8 Chev Diesel Turbo donk + fitting + engineering.

Already new that one.
But you can get a TD42T out of a GU for approx $7500 from a engine mob in QLD (they advertise in 4x4 trader). And that is complete long motor, comes with injector pump, starter, ALT, water pump, P/S and A/C.
And being a fact turbo, also all cross over pipes and exhaust manifolds to make a turbo work. You just need fuel and power and they should start.

I thought it may have been a bare motor, so I rang and asked and they said it came complete. I was going to install it myself with as little of out side assisstance as possible.

I got 2 quotes for a reco 4.2 non turbo diesel.

One with a six month warenty --> $3500

The other with a 12 month warenty --> $5300

These were both just the long motor (bottom end and head)

I would have had to use everything else off the old motor (manifolds, power steer, air con etc)

The prices I got seem cheap to the ones you guys got.
