6g72 has lost all its grunt :(

Post by deepdiverdave »

so i had an oil leak from the front crankshaft pulled it all off replaced the seal and put it all back on tightened everything up and started her up.
made sure the timing belt went on the same way with all the marks lining up to where they where previously and proceded to start her up started first go and ran well for about 20 seconds then the miss from my previous post came back so checked all the leads plugs and distributer all fine with good spark coming through each. called a mate who sujested checking to find out which cyl was missing by pulling a plug of at a time till i found 1 that didnt effect the engine when un plugged so i found the culprite then wanted to check the injector by swapping them round and seeing if the problem changed cyl.
once i had put it all back together and started it up the miss was gone :)
yesterday we went for a run up some hills and halfway up under load the engine just couldnt take it and lost all grunt, we decided to see if we could have a play and get it going better by advancing the timing a bit and hay presto loads of power untill about 20 mins later on another hill all power gone again.
so the question is has anyone got any ideas on what the f#*k is going on????????????

mate, i have a misfire too, i can't get to the bottom of it, i've replaced leads, plugs, rotor/cap... checked the timing both the dizzy and belt (yes i pulled the front of it apart again).
i've also replaced the idle step-up motor too... injectors are next on my list.
if you figure out whats causing yours, post up as i'd like to know.
cheers.

mate the spring on the timing belt tensioner was slowly deciding it was not up for the job and after a crankshaft seal replacement started her up and it was like a tractor then nothing. bent valve stems i think so big job to get the old girl going again but iv got a tj jeep now so i can take my time. imo it would be worth checking to make sure you have enough tension on the belt as 1 tooth off will run crap 2 and its fucked 3 and shit gets broken :bad-words:

Maybe you guys are looking at the wrong area? Have you checked the fuel pressure? Maybe the filter is blocked. IF it is, the beast will run OK under light load, then when you need the power, it will fail because the net pressure at the injectors will drop below what is needed. Give it a rest for a while and Hey Presto, all is OK again - until the next hill or power demand then it goes off again...

I have heardof a bit of crap in the fuel tamk which flowted over the pickup, blocking the system. When the load was off the pump, it moved away and all was normal. Nasty bugger that one...

Well then deepdiverdave,
you will have to check out the tank filter and as I dont know how long you have had this truck, I would be also checking to see if there is any inline filters under the truck, then that only leaves the one on the bulkhead.

If you find any crap in the one in the tank, dont forget to drain the tank and clean it out, before you close it up again.

i was under the impression the 6g72 is a free spinner, ie the valve will not hit the pistons when the timing belt goes

Yea, didnt read the post fully before, now see you say its a 12 valve, well thats what we over here in the UK call a NONE INFEREANCE HEAD, so you must have got the timing OFF a tooth or two, recheck it and BOB'S your uncle.

yeh, i actually bought this triton, turns out the tensioner was left loose, and the belt was skipping one the cams, the sounding like a tractor part was the belt hitting on the timing belt covers, put them back to good, but seems to still be running rough, so can any gaurantee these are non interference engines? cheers
