gu 4.2 to 4.8 conversion
gu 4.2 to 4.8 conversion
G'day guys I have a 4.8 GU wagon and a 4.2 GU ute, im looking at swapping the motors over as I am turning the ute into a comp truck. I have heard it is a relitively easy swap but are looking for some more info on what is exactly involved.
Re: gu 4.2 to 4.8 conversion
1. Take motor out of ute.
2. Take motor out of wagon.
3. put 4,2 motor into wagon.
4. put 4.8 motor into ute.
5. do a shite load of other stuff.........
Ummmm, I havent done it, but i do recall reading a thread on it recently.... cant recall if it was on here on patrol4x4.com.
The guy did a 4.5 petrol to 4.2tdi engine swap into a wagon, and it took a full day to remove just the petrol wiring loom and electronics (and dash, which is driven differently although looks the same) and another day to place the diesel wiring loom and dash in.... it was an epic. Without this, nothing will work.
The 4.8 is computer driven, the 4.2 is largely not (dep on the series- later ones have some electronics).
It is not a small job.

Re: gu 4.2 to 4.8 conversion
A lot of the big stuff will interswap pretty easy. The wiring will be the tricky bit. Killalux wired mine. Some people reckon the 5 speed auto would take the punishment other said it was weak and the 4 speed was a lot stronger option.
A tb48 maunual will need will need the Ecu, the ignition barrel and codded key to work. The tb48 with an auto will need the Ecu, gear control ecu, ignition barrel and key and the dash to work. I went with the manual gearbox and an Autronics Ecu. If I ever get an auto box I will go a 4 speed from the Gu as these are the strongest, then get Kewish to manualise and strengthen it.

Re: gu 4.2 to 4.8 conversion
Go for aftermarket management if you want a comp truck. Iv'e done a few of these and when tuned with a big exhaust and big throttle body they make a good 30 kW more than stock. Easier to wire up than a factory ecu, a bit dearer but worth it as who knows what the future holds? Turbo, electic fans, launch control and more stuff that aftermarket ecu's can do for you. Oh and if you want an auto the Wolf V500 can run it with multiple shift patterns or as a manual shift at the selection of a button, cool.
