Mixing oils

Post by thehanko »

So I have recently got an oil hand pump to make oil changes and diff filling etc all easier - but of course they use different oils, there is a small amount of oil residue in the pump after use and draining, is this likely to be enough to have any effect if you mixed what would be say 1 - 2tblspoons diff oil in 11 litres of engine oil?

It will be fine just let the extra drain out when and where you can. A few teaspoons will not harm anything.
Just be a little more carefull with LSD diffs as they are a little touchy with to much engine oil in them :P

And if its the zook your talking about? It will not harm a thing.....

You could always flush the pump with a few quick squirts of the next oil to eliminate the majority of contamination if you are still worried.

I think paranoia takes over.

Just swap to diff drum and pump away.

I would just do this. A couple of squirts to push some fresh oil through and will push out anymore oil left in.

I use the same technique but with an old oil container I use for putting fresh oil from the drum into the motor. When I need to use a different oil for a different car. I wash the container out a couple of times with the new oil.
