Still looking for the right truck...
Guys,
firstly thanks for all the help with Qs regarding the 2.8TDs that I was looking at.
I am now looking at 2 cars, and not too sure about details. I am looking at a petrol 4.2 litre 89 GQ LWB ST and a pertol 4 litre 90 80 series GXL cruiser. Both cars are on the money for what I am looking for. The GQ is stock with 238ks, and the 80 is lifted with 35s and a bar. It has 278ks.
What sort of power and economy could I expect out of these things and are they too long in the tooth mechanically? Both seem structurally very good.
I am planning to modify either truck mildly.

GQ Safari High Roof, MANUAL, 33s, 3" lift, CD, Nardi Wheel, bullbar, rack. 2.5m of sheer intimidation...
Get a Patrol, rip the TB4.2 out, rip the turbo 6 banger out of the XR6 put that in the 'troll then sell the rest of the XR6 to pay for some mad mods to the 'troll.
PATROL running a descent Ford engine.....How can you possibly go wrong
By the looks of your signature, it seems that you have mad a smart move and got rid of a toyota. Buy the patrol take it off road once and you'll wonder why you owned a toyota in the first place

this is really subjective in my opinion. whereas ive recently bought a 85 model 4b, my brother in law bought 2 year car. maybe this is more related to 4b versus car, but still think it is more based on how old of a vehicle you prefer.

A guy in our club has the 4.0ltr Landcruiser and it is a slug. It was carried over from the 60 series. He had no end of troubles trying to get over the dunes on the Border track. Prob either one will be qiuite thirsty.

Thanks guys.
I am really in two minds about this. The GQ is a stocker, with only visible mods a HR towbar. I can get it for $12,000 from a dealer. Very tidy truck though, and never done any HARD work. The 80 is slightly modded with a 4" lift, 35s and a snorkel. Oh, and a bullbar too. I can get it for about 14,500 private.
Thing is, if I buy the GQ, I will be getting it modded to similar specs as the 80 anyway, with the only addition to those mods being lockers I would say. The 80 is attractive because it has had all the money spent on it, and if the engine is a dog I could throw a diesel in there I guess. I am not fussed on the diesel/petrol debate. Each have their own advantages. The Surf was a weapon on road, very quick point to point for a diesel 4WD. I am looking at a 98 turbo diesel Patrol later today for $17,000. Sounds like its stolen or something at that price, but I will see.

ITs never that cheap or easy to "throw a diesel" in a car, or petrol, V8 V6 etc.. never cheap.
drive both cars, have NRMA inspections done on both too...
Is 80 series engineered? If not ask it to be first BEFORE you hand over $

In the 4.0L yota petrol you get no advantage over deisel.
I personally would go the toyota and do the engine change (if you really want).
You will prob end up spending the same amount of dough on an engine change as doin all the stuff the yota has to the nissan.
Then palm of the old yota dog donk for afew cases of beer and get pissed
I've got a modded 80t/d it's been great and if anything goes wrong with it it's usually not an expensive fix.You will also be suprised how cheap some of the genuine parts are !.
If you buy a petrol in any of these you had better have a well paying job to afford a trip.
The cruiser has bigger gaurds and requires less mods to fit 35's underneath wheareas the patrol you will struggle with th e tyres hitting every where as well as the gearing being up the shit on the Nissan.
The 80 will probably hold it's value longer than the other thing too.
As somebody else said drive both and make up your own mind but i think you'll find the 80 drives better.

That's a good car but it's not worth more than eight or nine grand at most.
It's just my opinion, but I think a better approach is to do your research properly, then decide what make and model you want, and then buy the best one you can. Continually looking at different makes is just a recipe for ongoing indecision.
I can't think of any reason on earth why you would go an 80 series Toyota over a GQ Patrol, since they aren't as good and, because of the one-eyed zealots, they cost more.
If you do decide to go a GQ, I'd be stunned if you couldn't find a very good one from 89 or 90 for well under $10k.
I paid well under that for a 93 model SWB maverick, completely stock and in absolutely lovely condition, and it wasn't the only one for sale that week at that price - it was just the best one. SWBs cost than LWBs so you should do better than that.
Dealer warranties are usually worthless and you can guarantee they're in the price tag.
