Tinny knocking noise????
Tinny knocking noise????
got a tinny knocking noise comming from engine bay, sounds like the clutch perhaps, sound was there two days ago, then went away, went away for to days now came back this morning, clutch is about 7yrs old feels a little bit funny, but no slipping. the noise is loud when it starts and then as car warms up it fades away, had mechanic look at it this morning he says clutch, water pump or belts, has amyone had this before????? any guidance would be appreciated.
oh i did get stuck in water for about 20 mins, it was high enough to be 2 inches deep in the car..........

Re: Tinny knocking noise????
Hey mate you got stuck;wheres the pictures.sounds like throw out bearing maybe got water in it.Housing may have water in it when it heats up dries water out in bearing when cooling upon shutdown maybe condensating back into bearing .Good luck let me know how you get on. Merry christmas happy new year.
Re: Tinny knocking noise????
Start it, check noise is there... remove all belts... start again and see if it's still there... if it isn't its probably belts or whatever they drive.... if it is there with belts off, may be clutch/throw out.... do the easiest first..

Buy yourself one of these: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... 50#details" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Very handy for pin pointing hard to find noises. If the knocking is loudest when the probe is pressed against the clutch inspection cover, then you have a clutch issue.
Just a tip, don't touch the probe on any moving parts - like a pulley - if you value your hearing. To check pulleys you touch the probe on the fixed bracket or center bolt for the pulley or in the case of a water pump, the body of the pump itself, body of alternator, etc.

Re: Tinny knocking noise????
Or just put a screwdriver to the where you want to listen and put your ear to the handle.
Re: Tinny knocking noise????
Well after putting the stethiscope on the gearbox, sump, then the clutch arm going to the slave sylinder..... WOW, the noise was so
loud i couldnt keep the stethiscope in my ears, very convinced its the thrust bearing.... considering the rubber boot is torn, and sitting in deep water
waiting to be recovered wouldnt help... now just gotta wait for wednesday
and put her into the shop to put the clutch in and job done, oh i ended up going for a clutch industries clutch.......over a safari sports one. And just to make things better my altenator shit its self on monday... at least thats an easy fix. Oh well thanks for your thoughts everyone.
