3 speed auto problems
3 speed auto problems
ok i have a 3 speed auto in my buggy when it is cold it has no problems at all.
but once it starts to heat up it looses drive below around 1200rpm, i can be driving up a rock at 1500rpm then if i slow down to under 1200rpm it is like it just kicks into neutral and will literally roll back like its not even in a gear
it does take a while to select the gears aswell
but it basically has no drive at idle or just above idle when it is warm
i have no idea with autos so any help is appreciated

Re: 3 speed auto problems
What does the fluid look like? you could start by flushing the lot, not just what's in the pan. change the filter too while you're at it.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Re: 3 speed auto problems
sounds like low fluid to me ... or a pump issue (cavatation ?)

Re: 3 speed auto problems
put a better cooler on it Tim, or look at different tranny fluids, the fluid might be heating up too much and thinning out so as not to let everything work the way it should inside the box.

How are you measuring the fluid level?

Re: 3 speed auto problems
Pull the pan and check the filter Tim,
if the clutchs and plates start to come to pieces , they block the filter up
when they have been running for a while, then when it cools the stuff falls of the filter, and then gets sucked back up and blocks once started and run for a while .
Gives a similar effect as low fluid.
Oh how the f74k are ya !.

Re: 3 speed auto problems
The filter should be just above the pan, usually a black flat object with a neck that slips into a hole in the valve body. When you drop the pan it will be staring you in the face. It will have an open window on the underside of the filter where the pump draws fluid up through the filter media then into the box through the neck. Check to see if there are any bits of clutch etc in the filter when you remove it, as well as the oil that drains. Check the quantity that comes out too. When you drop the pan you only get about half the oil out of the box, the rest stays in the converter and valve body/ports. To properly flush an auto and fill with clean oil you need a power flush or simillar that pumps the old oil out as and replaces all of it with new fluid.
