Post by xj33 »

have just bought a 96 hi lux with a commodore v6 and it has a terriable clunking noise coming from the gear box but when you push the clutch in it goes an runs smooth as,but when you try and drive it clunks and just about shakes the whole car .the bloke i bought it of said he thought it was the clutch fork and some one else suggested a bent input shaft, any suggestions ??? and any way to check without removing the box???

I doubt it's the clutch fork because if it was stuffed, you wouldn't be able to disengage the clutch.

If you push the clutch in and it makes a noise, it's usually a sign of a worn throw out bearing. If the clutch is engaged and it's making noise, it's often a sign of a worn/stuffed input shaft bearing (the bearing behind the cover inside the bellhousing. Both require the removal of the gearbox to repair.

Out of curiosity, why did you by the vehicle with such a potentially major repair required :?:
IF IT MOVES, SHOOT IT
IF IT DOESNT, CUT IT DOWN
IF ITS GREEN, PISS ON IT

theres no noise when your foot is on the clutch, the clutch is engaging,so i think it might be a stuffed input shaft then. i bought it cause the price was right and was told it just needed a new fork , anyone selling a cheap box :?:

What sort of bellhousing settup... if it has an inspection cover in the bottom half, you may be able to see whats going on thru it.. or it's a box out job.... may also be something else dont forget.... good luck
