Weekend Toy Sierra Build Thread

Post by Roffy88 »

Gday Everyone
What i am planning to do is build my 89 swb sierra into a weekend toy/ comp truck
Since i bought it 12months ago ive decided to take the tarp of it and start the build, by looking at the car it hasnt been shown much love in the past.
So What i want to do is a full ground up build, im going to strip the whole car back and start fresh from the start. im currently in the middle of building a rotisserie to mount it on for ease to work on all parts of the car.
The 1.3 seems rooted, was running but very sick, The 5 speed gearbox seemed fine but as we were driving around the yard it has jammed into 1st and will not come out.
so theres a rebuild planned for it. Im still in the process of deciding what engine i should use, with so many different choices out there. i think the 1.6 suzuki engine would be the easiest? but is it enough power?
Underneath i am planning on running the hilux diffs, spring im unsure of yet as i dont no whether to go hilux or stay with sierra springs? hilux would give more lift wouldnt it? I planned on drop shackles but heard they arnt as good as they seem? With the shockie set up, should i modify/move the shocks holding brackets for better flex?
I would like to run 33inch muddies but do have a set of 35s sitting here.... whatevers best for the build.
The winch bar, sliders and external roll cage im going to make myself as i like to be hands on
I would like to try do most of the build myself in the back shed as ive done a few different car builds over the years, but nothing this extensive and full on!
So anyone who has done this build or has some knowledge on where i should start or what i should do, id be more then happy to listen. when i work out how to load pics ill get some up of the starting product.
Many thanks
chris.

1st question for you is, What will you be driving? mud? rock? dirt climbs?

For many people with a zook, 33's are enough, with minimal suspension mods and using the existing diffs.

Is this car going to have rego?

Will be driving mostly rock and dirt hills, mud will be occasional.
id like to build it pretty extreme but try keep it registered if can, but if not then arwell.

You will struggle with rego on a modded zuk in QLD .. but I guess your aware of the QLD DOT's modification limitations ..
