1FZ-ZE Air Con Idle Up and Cold Idle adjustment

Post by Simmo88 »

I recently swapped in a new 1FZ into my 80 series after the original one did the head. It's been running great with no dramas. However, compared to my old motor, the new one seems to rev up alot when I put the air conditioner on. Normally I wouldn't mind, but it's very noticeable for example if stopped at the lights and it cuts in. Being an auto I can also feel it working against my braking efforts when stopping. Is there a way I can adjust how much the engine idles up by? On my old motor the normal idle was around 800rpm (On the high side), and when the compressor kicked in it jumped to 1000rpm. The new engine has a much nicer idle at 600rpm, but jumps to 1200rpm+. It does however start slowly dropping back to around 800rpm shortly after.

The other thing I noticed with the new engine (unless it was running very recently,) when it first starts up, it revs pretty high. From memory it's about 1600+rpm some mornings. As the engine starts to warm up it begins to drop back to normal. This takes a few minutes normally. To me, reving a cold engine like that for 1 or 2 minutes sounds abit weird. Does any one else's idle up this much?

As the problems are similar in nature (High initial rev up, followed by a slow drop in revs) I thought they might be related. Can they be adjusted? Who does the ECU control the RPM? could I have a sticky sensor?

Cheers RV80 will have a look at this for mine later date too. Anyone know if this will also sort the air con problem. Mine revs out close to 2000 and then drops off to 5-600, A real pain in arse when trying to do hill start in a manual.
