Air Diff Lockers..

Post by Eddywelder »

Ok will be heading down to ARB in the morning to purchase front and rear air lockers for my 40 series landcruiser but with 60s diffs/axles...any advice like do"s and donts when driving with these expensive pieces of gear?...guy at work(ex 4x4 mechanic )reckons be prepared as cvs will break on occasions....??also can they be operated independently or do they both lock at the same time...
thanks for the feedback 8-))

Yes you could break cv's,but they can break anytime, you don't need lockers to break them.
As for operation,The wiring diagram tells you to hook them up one way so the rear has to be engaged before the front will work,But you can alter the wiring so that you can operate them indvidually. But if you do this mod,you will put more stress on the cv's,especially when you only have the front locked...
And
Once you get them installed, start with a few easy drives so you can get the feal for them,as sometimes lockers can get you into more trouble and put you into some very uncomfortable spots very quickly and easily.
And you will find you won't have to drive the rig so hard to get up obsticles,Just let the truck crawl and use the traction to your advantage...

Hope this helps.
If you need any other help, just sing out..

Taking strain from one place will always put it somewhere else.. go bullet proof CVs the strain will go to the next weakest point in the chain then.

question, with twin lockers, you end up with single spinner diffs for road work -> yes/no??

Yes BUT you dont notice it with good suspension as weights are dist evenly.
Ive had AIR lockers on 5 vehicles now, 2 with twins, and havnt had a driveability prob with them being open.

Well I've had a Detroit front locker for over 6 months now.
Everyone kept telling me I'll be trashing CV's like mad with the IFS running 33"s then later 34"s. Also my CV's are running at a fair angle. Haven't broken one yet or the 4.88 front C&P for that matter. A Detroit is on (locked) all the the time except when you turn they unlock (sometimes  ).
However I've broken 2 rear axles with an ARB rear locker running 33"s prior to fitting the Detroit.
Either the Mitsi IFS is super strong or I've been incredibly lucky as the car cops heaps. I just keep breaking tie rods though............... A mate who has had a Detroit in the front of his Paj for 13 years has trashed only 4 CV's in that time (4 rear axles also) and that car cops absolute heaps. Then again I've seen standard Paj's crack em on mild terrain so a hell of a lot depends on driving style.
I wouldn't worry too much about the front CV's as long as you drive sensibly and are not running massive tyres (36"+) I think you will be fine.
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"

Bruce I'll take you for a drive in mine mate but put on a nappy
The Mitsi super select t/case allows you to drive on the bitumen in 4x4 as it has a centre diff and viscous coupling.
However with it engaged and a front Detroit when you change gears you change lanes, literally...........................
I only use that function if I want to scare the sh1t out of someone

me thinks rear, cause there is more load on the rear wheels when climbing, unless you like to reverse up hills

Rear in a 40/60/80 1st . (air locker)
Front or rear choice in a GQ /gu as the rear lsd is usually good for a few years so why waste it

Get a air locker in the front, and detroit or lockrite etc in rear, that way you can drive everything with the rear diff automatically locking in & using your front locker for more aide in bad areas.Sure I may go all over the lanes when changing gears too,but I can choose where I want to steer in the front by flicking it off. :)

Rob,

If you only ever intend on getting one put it in the front but if you do intend on getting another down the track get the rear done first then the front.
