hilux brakes

i have just bought a 85 single cab the brakes need attention but just wondering what you guys think before i start replacing things.
the brakes themselves work but i have to pump the pedal two or three tings before it pressurises and start pulling the car up, is there any chance it could just be a case of having to bleed the brakes or what other problems could be causing this

check for leak wheels, under dash,under bonnet
hilux done have good brakes

i've checked all under the bonnet and the calipers and brakes lines for leaks the brake fluid level is fine and hasnt dropped at all after a few drives the longest one being around 50km

Did you bleed the proportion valve?
Also the rear brakes arent way out of adjustment?

IF there are no leaks and the system has been properly bled I would say rear brakes way out of adjustment or faulty master cylinder.

A handbrake lever that pulls out way too far (and does not hold well) is a good indication that rear brakes are out of adjustment.

I had a similar problem when my front wheel bearing gave up. The wheel was wobbling side to side which spread the pads appart, so to get the brakes working I would need to give it two or three stabs on the pedal. Does still sound like your drums need some attention though, I also had an axle seal leak which did nothing to fix the problem

I recently did the brakes on my hilux.

Rip off the back wheel and drum and check out the shoes and adjuster. Good chance it will be full of shit and the adjuster seized up like mine was. The back brakes werent doing anything, all load was on the front. And the handbrake was shagged aswell. I replaced wheel cylinders as they were leaking a little bit and put on new shoes. Had to use an oxy on the adjusters to work them free. Gave the drums a rub and clean up with a bit of sand paper.

The fronts you need to check your calipers. The pistons may have rust on them which shags the seals. You can buy kits to overhaul these.

Could also be the master cylinder needs replacing, I dont know shit about them so someone else here might be able to help out.

mate i just redid front calipers on my truck, 33bux at repco for the rebuild kit, does both sides.

I had similar issues with my brakes, I just upgraded the fronts, I replaced the solid discs on my LN65 with vented discs from a LN106, and the stock calipers on mine(had 2x25mm pistons, and 2x35mm pistons) were dumped to fit LN106 calipers to match the new discs(4x45mm pistons).
Was a straight bolt on swap and the vented discs use the same wheel bearings as the solid ones, so it was all easy.
Only mods needed to fit was to cut out a small chunk of the brake backing plate as the new calipers are bigger, everything else lined up sweet.

I replaced the stock Lux brake master cyl and booster with a bigger booster/master cyl from an early 80series Landcruiser, bolts straight on, only mods needed was to make the hole in the firewall slightly bigger at the top, so it would sit flush.

As for the rears, I just paid someone to rebuild them, fit new drums, new shoes, new wheel cyls and wheel bearings.

The braking performance is the best its ever been since Ive owned it, I even had a handbrake, until I went wheeling.

yes what the go with the handbrake it allways seem to need adjusting once you get water or near mud LOL

Yeah they dont seem to work well for long. Go wheeling and it flogs out again

Just gotta keep the drums nice and clean and keep tightening the slack in the cable
