Hilux V8, Height of Engine?

Post by churnit »

Fitting a 253 into an '83 Hilux. Im making my own mounts and am looking for info on where the motor should sit in relation to the chassis, eg a measuerment from somewhere on the engine to somewhere on the chassis. I didnt think to measure the crankshaft to chassis before i pulled the old engine out.

are you going to keep the transfer in the same place? if so then slip it all in and suspend with engine crane bolt up your transfer mount and mount the engine as low as possable without binding up the rubber mount much, and without causing clearance issues with the front diff etc. a low centre of gravity is desireable so keep that in mind. dont bother with measurements just fit it wjere your application requires

Yeah thats what I've been thinking of doing, but would be nice to know if im higher or lower than where it theoretically should be.

what i do in that situation is whilst there is an original engine in I weld a piece of box section under the chassis to brace the gearbox height, the when you fit the new motor it fits to the correct angle and height.

long story short. you say that you want to know where it theoretically should be........ and that answer is nowhere near a hilux engine bay. it was not designed to go in there nor did anyone plan on people putting it there. this is why you just have to decide where you want it and where the gearbox and all clearances etc need it to be and then put it there. there really is not that much room to go up or down so your going to be about right. just put it where it fits and works and that is as right as it will ever be.

The thing is, im dummying it up on an old chassis, with no body, so i cant check any clearances around the body. The mounts im using started of much larger and im gradually grinding them down, the motor sitting lower and lower as i grind them down. I did measure the crankshaft to chassis height on a lux at a wreckers and as it sits im near that figure.
