Hi all, ive replaced the injector pump on my hilux, ive primed the fuel system, diesel is flowing out of the injector hoses at the injectors..but it still will not start? How do i set the timing properly? I set the 1st cylinder at top dead center (i think) i took the glow plug out and hand cranked the engine till it was at TDC??? after a few cranks it just wasnt happening...
If someone could guide me that'd be great appreciated =)

Don't know much about diesals, but I imagine it is possible that it is 180 degrees out, and you are injecting fuel on the start of the exhaust stroke instead of the inlet stroke.

Re: How to correctly set 2.8 hilux ignition timing???
There are timing marks where the cam, crank and pumps are. The cam one is under the cam pulley, the crank one is above the pulley and I think the pump one is to the drivers side of the pump pulley(Could be wrong) but there are marks on the casings anyway.
Takes a few goes as the pump will be under spring tension when you tension the timing belt. You need to compensate for it in one direction. You will work out which way to go after a few attempts.
Otherwise grab a manual from supercheap and go from there.

Sounds like the culprit. even with the timing off a fair bit it should still start up. Have a look at the side of the timing case and pump body, sometimes there is a mark there for getting the timing spot on.
The worst part about being told you have Alzheimer's, is that it doesn't just happen once.
Re: How to correctly set 2.8 hilux ignition timing???
If you've had the injection pump off you'll need to time it, if it's out it can cause the car to run like crap. You'll need the special tool but may be able to get away with a dial indicator with long probe. It's a bit fiddly and hard to explain exactly how to do it, better of getting the experts to do it if you can't get the special tool.
