Traded the hand grenade in at xmas for a 2010 TB48. Loving the power but need bigger tanks to drive further
So questions on LRT's. As the new TB48's dont come with a sub tank and only the 95L rear tank what have others done ? I dont plan or wish to install LPG as plan on keeping this for many years and the less problems, head issues etc the better. Plus cant get LPG last time I checked in the desert.
Most of the current manufactors ie, out of town 4WD etc say the deisel middle 75L tank will not fit in the petrol ? Looking underneath dont see why it wouldnt ? can onyone comment, also thinking a cheap idea for the interim is to install a ZD30 Sub tank so any issues with using a deisel tank in a petrol car, clean it out properly etc.
Idea's for plumbing is pump it back into main tank and as I have NO sub tank fuel gauge what have others done ?
hey mate arb make a 120l rear tank, that bolts straight in nice, not sure how much as it was on the vehicle when i bought it, but i have a sub tank as well. i thought all 4.8 had dual tanks, mines an older gu 03 model.
if you live in qld aftermarket fuel tanks need to be mod plated legally as well, not sure about other states,
Been doing alot of research and I can get LRA, Long Ranger and Brown Davis to replace teh rear stock 95L with a 147L. Reading up the sub tank was removed in around 2006 due to emissions. So for the front apparently Long Ranger have done one for the TB48 but nothing on their website. I called LRA yesterday and they said they could do something but sounded suss ? Only Brown David stock a specific sub tank (75L) for the TB48 on the website.
Thinking at this stage about maybe install a 147L rear and maybe in the interim a deisel sub tank with external fuel pump etc ? will give me 180L combined. Just need to source teh dual filler from a ZD30 and sub tank etc. Cause if I go a Brown davis sub tank I still need all teh filler parts etc.
I know he was looking at plumbing it so both tanks pumped directly to the front of the car, but in the end did the transfer to main tank set up as he couldnt get it to work any other way. Maybe it was a fuel control/ECU issue that stopped this from working?
IIRC he used the diesel transfer pump obtained from a wreck (??)
Next time i talk to him I'll ask more details and let you know more about the set up.

Keith from Brown Davis called me today and he knew his stuff, he can do it but but the front tank must be done by him in Melb as its quite custom and unique, apparently the 4WD TV show will be doing one with Brown Davis very soon. I'm just surprised it is so hard as with all LPG conversions, you would think many tanks would be installed into this space. But when you think (guessing only) 10% of GU's are 4.8's and teh rest ZD30's what do you expect. Plus I guess when they do a front tank for LPG all fuel lines etc are relocated from the rear to the front tank, just amazed how hard it is all getting.
But being a tight ar$e might just install a ZD30 sub 1st as I need 80% of that install anyway

If you nurse them and drive normal can get them down under 18l/100 but if you flog them easily blow 30l/100 no worries at all, 4.8 power is awesome even left stock standard but if you buy a 4.8 your buying it for the power not the economy. maybe chase one down with gas might be the go...or stick with the smaller donk
Ok i had had the ZD30 for 5 years and loved it, but I tow a 2.5t boat and was just getting sick of doing 60k per hour up hills. In the ZD30 I would get 18/19 towing and best towing was 15.5 at ¼ throttle all the way to Brisbane, If I really flogged it at 110km all the way fuel would be 20-21lph. I towed a car trailer in my mates Rodeo and got 22lph for 3000km.
So when I bought the TB48 in Brisbane I towed home from Brisbane I was doing 110km all the way and was getting 25-26lph. For around town I still haven’t logged my receipts and figures yet. Also, coming up Mooney Mooney I was doing 110kph towing, the ZD30 was 60kph. I just love it but still playing lead foot.
OK..... the sub tank fitted was the LRA tank used when 4.8's are converted to LPG ( ie where the std fuel tank is replaced with LPG tank). The LRA 145l tank was also fitted at the same time to replace the std 85l main tank.
Note this is on an ex WA cop 4.8 manual patrol, which came with 2 tanks. (special police order???)
Apparently the subby is around 85l carrying capacity, and he used a std transfer pump (ie out of a 4.5 petrol dual tank model?). He did extend the pick up etc so he can use almost the full 85l. Most LRA tanks only allow you to use around 60-70l of the 80 odd when using the std pick up and transfer pump.
There were some issues with plumbing, wiring etc in getting it to send fuel straight to the engine bay, so it was set up as per Nissan norm, ie to transfer to the main tank.
All up he gets around 650-750k's range from 145 + 85 l , and yes, he drives it hard.
Re the guage...... dunno. But surely any reasonable auto sparky should be able to assist. A 2nd guage may be required, most likely if the factory 'double' guage wasnt fitted, the wiring for it (ie the sub tank sender unit etc) wont be there either.
