How to Reverse Winch - hunty
Hi Guyz
Just thought I would post up a vid I made as a result of a challenge / bet with a mate - is it possible to reverse winch yourself with a front mounted winch - thanx to Dave 'Wooders" Woodly for assuring me it WAS possible LoL enjoy - cheers Hunty

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
Exactly what I thought you would do, and I've had the theory in my head for quite a while - Glad to see it works!!!
Now I just need to get enough snatch blocks....

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
At first glance it doesn't make sense - it was quite a noodle scratcher! lol - I had always used to carry 2 snatch blocks, decided to bite the bullet and buy a 3rd all the time hoping it would work - I thought another snatch block could come in handy anyway especially as I sometimes have to pull film trucks that are bogged on just soft grass! and as I'm sure you know snatching extra heavy things can be dangerous - i recently pulled a stuck 10t truck with the 3 snatchies - i had a tree protector anchoring my towbar to a tree in order to stop my jeep skidding with all 4 wheels locked towards the truck - So go ahead a get 3 snatchies - im sure you will have fun using them sometime!tehekho wrote:Exactly what I thought you would do, and I've had the theory in my head for quite a while - Glad to see it works!!!

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
I understand why you say the vehicle gets pulled backwards due to more force on the rear V the front.... but In essence arent you just taking up the slack and stretching the winch line/trying to straigthen it out??? You would be very limited in the distance you can pull your vehicle back....plus Id like to know what the opposing forces are like when you start to get the winch line tight?
Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
The line doesn't just stretch, it does actually work. Try drawing it up on a bit of paper and you'll be able to see that as the car moves back the line is getting shorter, it just looks odd because the distance between the winch and first winch block is getting longer.uninformed wrote:I understand why you say the vehicle gets pulled backwards due to more force on the rear V the front.... but In essence arent you just taking up the slack and stretching the winch line/trying to straigthen it out??? Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
Nothing magic about that,, good luck finding enough anchor points to rig that up when you actually need it.

Too True!
so I have taken some more smart@ss pills and discovered that 2 trees / anchor points is enough - 1 somewhere in front and 1 somewhere behind to one side will work just fine.
I also hope I never have to reverse winch myself ! LoL.
I may have a go at making a vid of the 2 point version (If I don't cop too much of a flogging for the first vid LoL)

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
I guess im just lost by the fact that the winch line is only X long, the winch is winding it onto the drum....the line is getting shorter...but the distance from the first snatch block is getting further, the distance from the 1st - 2nd snatch block stays the same....the distance from the 2nd-3rd gets closer so gives up some rope/wire to the 1st snatch block.....but you wont get far before it wont go any further...plus you need the anchor points in pretty good postion otherwise you will be pulling the vehicle off line and/or the difference in distances between snatch blocks wont be in your favour....
its cute....but thats about it

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
You could use it to winch you a few metres - hardly ideal, but when do circumstances like to make themselves easy - this is just another thing to keep in the mental arsenal. Probably not overly practical, but it could save a long walk for somebody...uninformed wrote:I guess im just lost by the fact that the winch line is only X long, the winch is winding it onto the drum....the line is getting shorter...but the distance from the first snatch block is getting further, the distance from the 1st - 2nd snatch block stays the same....the distance from the 2nd-3rd gets closer so gives up some rope/wire to the 1st snatch block.....but you wont get far before it wont go any further...plus you need the anchor points in pretty good postion otherwise you will be pulling the vehicle off line and/or the difference in distances between snatch blocks wont be in your favour....

I mid mounted my winch and can winch back or forward, so
One time i was stuck along the Mary river in the NT and things were getting desperate. My only anchor point was some trees off the side of the track behind me. I ended up running the rope straight under the vehicle, under both diffs, through a shackle from my rear recovery hook and to the tree.
It was really thick mud and a very hard winch, but i got it out. It also wore a bit of a groove in both axle housins and bent my drag link.
Wouldn't wanna do that with your poxy fibre ropes.
Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
Burying a spare wasn't an option? I take it time was a factor...
I'll run up a hill with my KG of poxy fibre rops over dragging 20 kgs any day - plus good luck to you if you snap yours - fibre is spliced in about 2 minutes

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
Buy a spare what?
Theres no way i would have got out if i had fibre rope,, doesn't really matter, coz fibre rope wasn't available back then.
And, I don't run up hills.

in theory all you have to do is to winch your self backwards that few meters , jump on the brake so i doesnt go forward ( if possible) , release the tension on the winch and go again
so i can see it is possible , but generally when i get stuck that system wouldnt be practicle, i would need to see it done on a really stuck car and see how far he gets
Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
Twas a good video, apart from the lame jeeps don't get stuck gag
Jeeps suck

more importantly is the loaction of the anchor points and length of rope...why did the jeep stop after only a few meters....would have been interesting to see it keep going

Make sure u got a Toyota there to pull u out if it doesn't work
Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
It took me a while to get my head around this so I drew a picture that made it clearer for me.
The way it now makes sense in my head is... the total distance from the A/C position to the D position is made up of some doubled line (AB, BC) and some single line (ED). The more the vehicle moves backwards, the less doubled line there is, and the more single line there is. Hence the total amount of rope gets shorter and shorter as the vehicle moves backwards, because there is less doubled-up rope.
It's quite cool, maybe not useful in the real world all that often but worth having in the back of your mind I guess.

This is not legal advice.

Hey Chimpboy
Awesome work on the drawing and explanation - thanx for posting up!
I have received much email regarding this "reverse winch" thing and now I will have to actually get my jeep stuck to prove that it can work real world Skool

Re: How to Reverse Winch - hunty
I would hate to see someone forget about the snatch block at b and connect it to the car - would be an easy mistake for some! car would go from [ ] to < >

But then those Jeep guys spend most of their time trying to work out a new way of recovering themselves just in case they actually ever took their Jeep somewhere they might get stuck. Like a dirt car park or similar

Also correct me if I'm wrong but don't you turn shackles back 1/2 turn from being tight? Not do them up tight? As per video?

Cheers Ethan for spotting one of my many mistakes - I normally loosen the shackles back a tad to ensure the don't bind up - not sure what happened I think that a person looses 50 IQ points when a camera is pointed at them - cheers Huntyethann wrote:Also correct me if I'm wrong but don't you turn shackles back 1/2 turn from being tight?
