80 Series engine overheating & boost problems
Hey All
Iv got a 80 series 1993 1hz turbo, im having trouble with it overheating on a hot day soon as i turn the aircon on, it had brnadd new desert cooler radiator in it new water pump, viscos hub and thermostate. On occasion it will over heat up hill without the aircon on.
It also dies in the arse at full boost if it even gets to full boost. running 8psi and it gets to around 8 on a cold morning but starts to die at 5psi if its hot and drops to about 3psi. any suggestions

Hi Wade,
sounds like a air flow problem as above stated check air cleaner or intake pipes aren't blocked or closed off , U may also have a restricted exhaust system creating back pressure in exh system. How much black smoke does it blow under load especially when under heavy load maybe overfuelling which with precombustion chamber motors like yours they are know to preform badly with the more fuel thats fed into them so this will cause them to overheat.
Hope this gives U some guide to your problem

How much black smoke does it blow under load especially when under heavy load maybe overfuelling which with precombustion chamber motors like yours they are know to preform badly with the more fuel thats fed into them so this will cause them to overheat.

I tryed all the things suggest today ended up being to much fuel so i backed of the fuel and funs alot smother but my turbo is barley boosing 4psi, if i put a intercooler on will that help me be able to put the fuel back in so i can get around 8 - 10 psi boost?

Took my cruiser driving today was fairly hot day and it overheated again and still rnning like crap, has anyone eles got anyother ideas?

Hey, i am putting a turbo on my 1hz, so naturally i am interested in your situation.
If you have done all those things to your cooling system, it must something else.
What about your tranny oil temp?
Engine oil quality?
Are your injectors cleaned? If the spray pattern is fawked you will have hot spots in your cylinder, that will be too hot to transfer heat to the walls.
What about exhaust flow?
I have heard that people do a body lift so the radiator is exposed to more air.
In my setup i will add a tranny cooler so the radiator doesn't have to absorb so much heat from the tranny.
Engine oil cooler as well so the engine is cooler.
I think you need the basics before you add intercooler.

I have seen this a LOT of time before.
When some shops or people install turbo kits on the 1HZ cruisers, they either forget or dont know to take out the expansion ring that seperates the two manifold halves.
Sooner or later due to the increased pressure and temperature in the manifold it will partially melt and dislodge, finding its way to the turbine wheel, either destroying it. Or blocking the entry onto the turbine wheel severely restricting the flow of gas.
Of course your injector pump doesnt know this, and will continue to inject the correct quantity of fuel, except there is no air to go with it anymore. The motor there for over heats considerably, looses alot of performance and 99.99% of the time destroys the turbo in the process.
How do you figure out if this is the case? Two ways.
1) Tap a 1/8th hole in the exhaust manifold and one in the dump pipe. Measure the pressure before and after.
2) Remove the turbo/manifold and physically look in there.
